There have been a lot of telling posts in this thread.

Why does everyone buy into that Fermi bullshite? It's literally just some crackpot idea that some PhD put out and now everyone thinks it's the end all be all of alien theories. Earth being the only planet with intelligent life in the universe is just as likely as that theory.
What theory are you referring to? The Fermi Paradox doesn't presuppose a solution. It just highlights the paradox: for all the presumed statistical likelihood of life, why haven't we (yet) seen evidence for it elsewhere in the universe?
Fermi himself offered up some ideas, but they're in no way conclusive. As far as I know, the Fermi Paradox makes no claims.

Its really funny with all the downvotes. Whats not so funny is all the mindless zombies who blindnessly except what they are told . Its excepted that the government lies and has lied on many things. Yet , NASA another government agency gets a free pass in the name of science . Everything in space beyond low earth orbit is science fiction . Tons of theories from people you think are way smarter than you. You require no proof of any of it just except what is being presented ......"Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality." So they're lying then? Just frick knowledge?

We only know of 1300 planets.... what are you so fricking confused about. I mean google it at the very fricking least.
But it's a certainty there are far more than that and that we will continue to discover them. I don't see why 1300 of them specifically are relevant to the equation.
quote:
Jesus Christ. We've only discovered 1300 planets. What's so complicated about that?
Because it's like saying I can see 50 trees, so this is relevant to all I need to know. Actually no, we need to keep wandering through the forest and discover millions of planets. It's not an applicable sample size when we know we have discovered less than .00001% of planets. It's like saying we can only see this many stars directly in the Milky Way when we know there are a hundred billion or more.
quote:
Being likely is not the same as statistical certainty based on WHAT WE KNOW FOR SURE
It's a statistical certainty, hence the statistical part of it. If we saw it, then it's a certainty. It is something we can pretty much say that the chances of life not being anywhere but Earth is a certainty. Any other mindset is simply narcisstic and delusional.
quote:
... You're just making shite up dude, there is no proof of bacteria on Mars currently
Explain the natural production of methane then. We know for a concrete fact that the planet is dead, so volcanos aren't producing it. The next most likely choice is life. There's a reason NASA is paying billions of dollars to find it, and it's because they think it is there.

Estimates are around 200 billion galaxies in the universe (and possibly even more), so we're very likely talking about a Universe filled with around 10(24)planets, or, for those of you who like it written out, around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in our observable Universe. That's all the stats I need to know there is a large amount of life, especially intelligent life in our universe. It's hard to wrap your mind around how big the universe is and how unlikely it is we are the only ones. When people doubt this it reminds me of my college roommate who was a strict southern baptist who believed in Adam and Eve and when I asked him about dinosaurs and fossils he told me god put them in the ground to test our faith. LOL! Give me a break.
There's no conspiracy from NASA as the world community is responsible for many astronomical discoveries. People need to crawl out from their caves and understand we aren't just it and god didn't magically make the earth appear and put Adam and Eve here. There are mind blowing stats out there such as how long the universe will be around and how long life is possible in the universe given that timeline. Here's a great link....best part starts around the 1:45 mark. LINK

Exciting stuff. We are breaking new ground every hour.

We are not an old planet
We are not very unique
We have millions of twins among the billions of planets
It is really like this u go to ocean and catch a fish. U fish for 30 more minutes but don't catch or see anymore fish. Thus u conclude that there was only one fish in the ocean. That example is obviously no where close to scale.
There is no fricking paradox.
Also, aliens have been here 1000s of times

You lost me on the aliens bit.

" it's not really a secret man. They have been coming here forever. We almost just said frick it and announced it in 70s then decided it would cause too much instabiliy.
We meet with groups on them on regular basis. What about, etc, no clue. Levels about my old security clearance lol

That's true, BUT, the nearest galaxy is like 2 million light years away. All other galaxies are so far away that the question of whether they have life or not is irrelevant and will never be proven.
(That is unless we or the aliens invent some sort of special warp drive technology. I guess anything's possible).

would they know if it had anything resembling capability to support life
In reality they couldn't. The "habitable zone" is determined by distance from a parent star and that star's intensity. In our solar system, there are two planets within the "habitable zone", Venus and Earth. We know the former is uninhabitable due to a previously unanticipated runaway greenhouse effect.
Thanks to accelerating AGW, Earth will likely join Venus in the "illivable planets" category, sometime in the future.

quote:The problem is reading comprehension. Reading with virtually no comprehension is a widespread problem on TD. Thus some of the inane comments posted here and elsewhere. You do best to limit your responses to a one syllable word. Anything more puts you at risk.
It's like people aren't even reading what I'm saying.
BTW: I join in your view of life and certainty of it somewhere, the ability to "know" where it is or is not with no certainty, and the lack of a proven metric beyond the theoretical.
