Read about the Fermi paradox. It explains why we haven't (and may never ) discover life, even though its basically impossible for there to be no other life in the universe.

These are the people who think a fish fricked a frog and made humans, who think the earth was created in 7 days, and think a trip from NOLA to Texas is world traveling. Give them a break.

Good point. But the real gist of the extrapolation of Fermi is the great filter and figuring out where we are in that continuum.

Here is an excellent Article on that very subject.

I would encourage anyone who has a little time on their hands and who might like to expand their mind a little to peruse the archived articles.

Very sciency. And humerous.

Exactly. The absolute worst thing that could happen to mankind is If NASA was to somehow find an ancient civilization on Mars.

At that point, we would know that we are doomed as a species.

How do they know there are planets there? They can't see them can they? Are they not too far away?

Sometimes I swear that NASA just guesses on some shite and the science community just accepts it so they seem like they're making progress. I know my theory is bullshite but I always think that when they say stuff that just seems impossible to know with our current tech.

How do they figure this shite out with it being 39 light years away and no eyes on the source?

Sounds like a lot of speculation to me.

I almost make a crack about anti-science conservative idiots but it's just too easy

All planets MAY have had life evolve on them at some point.

It is also true that we have no proof of life outside of our solar system.

And

It is true that it is possible that NO LIFE has ever existed outside of our solar system.

All NASA has found is some planets that come closer to earth like than the hell holes they have previously discovered.

It's truly amazing to me what's out there. I wish I could be around for some of the things NASA knows but doesn't tell us.

As humans, we don't know enough to know that we don't know. There's so much out there. That's why I laugh at hardcore atheists and hardcore members of a religion. There's too much going on in the universe for any of us to fathom, let alone understand.

Yeah it's also "possible" that OJ didn't do it.

According to Fermi and the great filter, we would be doomed. But he strikes me as a pessimist. Read the article that I linked. It really is thoughtful on this subject.

The best outcome would be the first postulate. But in all of that vastness I'm pretty skeptical. Fermi is probably right...as much as I hate typing that.

It would take a frick load longer than 5,900 years to get there if we traveled at 20,000 mph. Try 1.33 million years.

Statistically, it's as unlikely as something can be without actually violating the known laws of the universe.

For all intents and purposes, given the number of planets in the known universe, it's impossible for Earth to be the only source of life.

Plenty of alternate hypothesis to the filter: maybe it is too expensive to spread physically throughout the galaxy, maybe Earth is purposely isolated, maybe it is dangerous to communicate and hence civilizations actively hide, etc etc. All of which the fermi author concedes as plausible.

I wish they'd hurry up and invent the warp drive. I might even agree to more taxes for something that cool

I agree. But that doesn't mean intelligent life. I think that Fermi is probably right as I said above. But the question remains of our place before, or after, the great filter.
