In Houston Nutt's last season, they only had two wins and they got blown out in most of their games. The LSU game had the famous mercy knee.
So at that point, Ole Miss was at the bottom of the barrel. Another embarrassing season and still the only program in the West never to make it to Atlanta. The risk/reward for cheating probably seemed like a good deal. I bet a lot of bottom-dwellers face that fork in the road.

I need to find it but that game had the greatest half time interview ever.
Houston nutt already New he was getting canned, LSU was rolling and ole miss was helpless. The sideline reporter asks something to the effect of "what adjustments do plan on making to get back in this?"
Nutt just shurggs and fumbles his way thru "ehhh not sure"

Rebel Grove, Ole Miss’ Rivals website, reports that the player Ole Miss boosters allegedly paid is Leo Lewis, a four-star linebacker who went to MSU in the class of 2015. The Rebels, according to reporter Neal McCready, tried to show the SEC some dirt:
Ole Miss, per multiple sources, possesses a recording, and has given the SEC a copy, of Lewis’ mother asking Ole Miss for money and detailing incentives she received from other programs, including Mississippi State.
OM tried dragging MSU into this mess

weren't we in on Lewis?
and people wonder why many roll their eyes anytime we're in on a prospect from there

Why. 154 pages isn't a lot for anything. Short actually.
