I say Chevy Chase or Dan Aykroyd

It's all generational.
But putting aside youth and generation.
I'd say Phil Hartman was the funniest over the long haul and most professional.

Phil was great, no doubt.
Honestly, I could list several that could be contenders.
Chevy
Dan
Phil
Dana Carvey
Belushi
Murphy
Myers
Breuer
Farley
Sandler
Ferrell
Macdonald
Murray

I have a certain type, I guess.
After Hartman, in no particular order:
Darrell Hammond
Chris Parnell
Bill Hader
Love those guys. They make me laugh just by looking at them.

I love the cast from the early to mid 90s. I grew up watching chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Phil Hartman, Tim meadows, Kevin Nealon, Michael Myers, Dana carvey, David spade, and rob snider. It went from that to that crap they have now. I haven't watched Saturday night live since will farrel was still there.

Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy

Steve Martin wasn't a cast member. Just hosted a zillion times.

I grew up with Will Ferrell so I'm a bit biased, but if you can find a decent version of his terrible boss skit with Pierce Brosnan, I promise you'll nearly piss yourself from laughing so hard.

Bill Hader was a diamond swimming in a bowl of shite

Norm was my favorite for weekend update

Funny Norm McDonald story:
I heard him say in an interview that when he was brought back to host a few years ago, as a joke he was going to do the monologue at the opening then just leave and not tell anyone but one of his friends talked him out of it. Would have been an awesome

I like Phil as well, but Eddie Murphy was funny back in his younger days.

Lovitz was always the one that made me laugh no matter how terrible the skit.

I don't know if Phil Hartman was the funniest, but he was definitely the best, and the perfect foil as well. No matter how bad a sketch might've been, he could always elevate it.
But as far as "funniest" goes, Carvey and Farley could usually pull laughs out of thin air, so I'll go with them.
