Other than that, same thing.

Just another overblown controversial topic. Meanwhile, people are killing each other in the streets while we're sitting here debating whether or not this student/school were in the right or wrong. Seriously though, a student has a dumb arse opinion that gets made public and everyone in Baton Rouge is talking about it. Why not focus on more important things?

Because nothing can be done about the other things that's why.

it is probably the one thing people can rally around and feel that they are making a difference in.

The other 4 things listed, on an individual level, cannot be fixed.

Unfortunately you might be right. As a black man I don't like like some of her opinions, but she's a high school kid.

Leave her the frick alone.

both of these are perpetrated on creatures that have absolutely no control over their situation. Nor are their false accusations of pedophilia or killing puppies (generally). Racism and rape can be co-opted to promote an agenda.

It's things like this that I wish more people knew about. There's so much misinformation out there about slavery in general. All black americans are considered to be descendants of slaves and every white person a slave owner. White americans went and took Africans out of their homes. Only blacks were slaves. Only whites were slave owners. More slaves in American than anywhere else. Slavery started in America. America was the last place to end slavery.

Slavery is/was terrible. There's no need to make shite up or exaggerate it, unless you need the rhetoric/hyperbole for personal/political gain.

My thoughts on all of this:

1. This is a prime example of the stupidity of youth.

2. The bad grammar, misinterpretations of evidence, and the scattershot nature of her "argument" indicate that this is not a very good student, and may have a learning disability of some sort. She is obviously not up to normal 12th grade standards.

3. St. Michael is not on the same level academically as Catholic, U-HIgh, Episcopal, and others. Everyone knows that. But this is not indicative of the typical St. Michael student. The school will just have to take its black eye on this one.

4. St. Michael's principal, Ellen Lee, is actually a pretty good principal. One rogue student isn't indicative of a leadership or culture problem at St. Michael.

5. Get ready, St. Michael, to take it in the teeth when the "dialogue about race" crowd comes knocking on your door. They won't miss this opportunity to demonstrate their self-righteousness to you.

6. What the girl wrote just can't be defended. It's flat wrong. I wish the reaction to this story would be a focus on helping this student, as opposed to a focus on blanket statements about race and schooling. The first statement where she says "I hate almost every black person" indicates that she needs help. If she's telling the truth, then that's too much hate to carry around. More likely, if she's overstating her feelings, then she needs to learn how to control them, express them, and frame her position more accurately. Either way, this young person apparently has difficulty socializing and/or communicating on a basic level. Honestly, my main reaction is that I feel sorry for her.

I basically imagine this girl to have the same mental capacity as the "Cash me ousside" girl.

Then why did she share it with someone other than the teacher?

I don't have time to sift this entire thread but I'm just wondering why they felt the need to address this in the media in the first place. Did she post this on fb or something? If not, and it was only turned into teachers and perhaps peers..what was the purpose of making a public statement that has only created negative publicity for this school-especially academically.
