How many promises does this make that Trump has followed through on?
quote:
“I owe it to you all to give you clarity on the political reality in the United States, and to state the fair demand from my country’s people in concrete terms,” he said during a closed-door meeting, according to remarks provided to reporters traveling with him. “America will meet its responsibilities, but if your nations do not want to see America moderate its commitment to the alliance, each of your capitals needs to show its support for our common defense.”

Who could be against this? He's telling countries to live up to the commitments they have made.

Not against the organization, but against America forcing other countries to pay their fair share. (at least I guess that's the point)

No spin from me. People pay body guards for their services, people are expecting our protection for free. We should be getting paid more.

So the new standard is meet all your promises in a month or you're a liar?

My spin is this: Just having countries pay their fair share is not enough. The deal should be re-written to have them pay us.
Posted on 2/15/17 at 11:39 am to Jjdoc
I can get on board with this.

If anything, you'll find people who think the military should scale back out of NATO entirely, or at least remove our bases from there.
I doubt the Left has much opinion on it at all. The Right is all for getting the money to pay for these things; Libertarians all about getting our bases and soldiers back on American soil.
If an American military base in Germany is unable to pay for all of its operating costs with German funds, it shouldn't be there in the first place. I'm not saying Germany should pay for our planes, but they should pay for our fuel. And reimburse us for the salaries of the men and women who fly them, maintain them, etc.

All of those are 'promises' he's entirely backed off of since the election (except Obamacare which only the cultists still believe).

Actually talking about that now. Everything can't be done in a day. Nice attempt though.
PS..... This thread on promises kept. Start one about those not kept if you want to.

IRS just got rid of the mandate. That was the promise he gave to do immediately.
The rest is coming. I believe 2 MAJOR players are pulling out. It's over.
I could go through all of those your posted, and we both know it wouldn't go your way.

Not all conservatives want the military to be all over the world at our expense. You want our protection pay for it.
We should ask Germany if they care more about social causes or defense. You find a way to pay for both or don't expect us to subsidize it.

You are a true believer in President Trump to think all of that could be accomplished in less than a month. You must be more MAGA than me. MAGA on brother

I was referring to other countries not having a problem with us paying more and them paying less of each's fair share. Might not have used the right word but when all others seem to be against one, then they have a global burr under their saddles concerning the U.S.

this is similar to what's been said under the past 3 presidents, e.g.:

Blunt U.S. Warning Reveals Deep Strains in NATO
By THOM SHANKER and STEVEN ERLANGERJUNE 10, 2011
BRUSSELS — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates sharply criticized NATO nations on Friday for what he said were shortages of military spending and political will, warning of “a dim if not dismal future” and “irrelevance” for the alliance unless more member nations contributed weapons, money and personnel.
In his final policy speech before he steps down, Mr. Gates issued a dire and unusually direct warning that the United States, the traditional leader and patron of the alliance, was exhausted by a decade of war and its own mounting budget deficits and simply might not see NATO as worth supporting any longer.
