I've done it in a truck. Most of the way is boring as frick, with a few cool things in between. Get comfortable driving fast.

An old roommate once did a solo bicycle trip across the country to honor his mom that had passed away from cancer. He was/is in insanely good shape.

I am jealous just thinking about this.

My brother can put your bike on his flatbed and save you the trip.
He crisscrosses the country on a regular basis.

I've done it several times. My last trip was over 7000 miles and hit most major western national parks.
It's by far my best vacations of my life. Will try to drag up some pics when I get home tonight.

Just get a Spot Messenger, you wuss. Nothing beats a long moto trip by yourself. I want to do a solo around the world, that probably freaks you the frick out. Two points about guns, definitely proves it.

Don't go alone. These are really long rides and a lot can go wrong. Best to have someone with you.

haha, this is a concern. I've previously ridden a 1000 cc V-Storm which is a very comfortable bike. I literally just picked up a smaller 750cc Moto Guzzi when I received orders to move this summer. Will be more of an adventure riding the Guzzi.
See if you can find an old used seat for it and get Russell Day Long to convert it.
I have two seats for my touring bike. One for riding around town and the RDL. The RDL design is by far the best seat I have ever sat on. However you do lose some maneuverability, so I don't use it when I go play in the mountains.

You probably wouldn't get 20 miles from home before some teenager ends your life while texting and not paying attention to the road.

I done it several times, you don't need a kidney belt, have fun, fuel stations can be a challenge, plan fuel stops carefully.

My uncle rode from AZ to LA via MT when he was discharged from the military.
He rested up for about a week and made another round trip ride to MT.

id say get a bike for for purpose. You need something good on the highway and with cases. Having a light bike on the interstate with a crosswind or headwind and trying to blast 70-80mph for 4 hours is pretty grim.
I basically took my street bike around and had a blast (about 20k miles). But it was enough. Now I barely take it around the neighborhood.

Trans-am Trail
No highways, if you already know cycling is the way to see America, Try Adventure Riding. the off-road experience will be second to NOTHING.
Riding goat trails on the side of 10kft cliffs.....some areas so remote you will not see a single soul.
Took Sams New Route through Utah etc.
Did this last July1-31/2016 with my son for his graduation. Took us 25 days of riding and 4 days to drive/truck back the bikes from Oregon because we drove south down the Cali Coast.
Yes I'm doing it again, YES I'd recommend EVERYONE do it.
I'm 48 my son is 18
Came home and 2 weeks later we have the great flood of 2016....
Bikes survived. Lost some gear
(Floated off)
Soon as my house is finished, I'm gearing back up to take the wife.
Contact me for info and I'll send you my cell number

Did the Sturgis trip on my bike in 15. Had a great ride there and back. One thing I would suggest is stop when you need to. Nothing worse than pushing through and being miserable because this is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. You only have to stop for a few minutes to stretch your legs and you should be fine. Also, drink lots of water if you are traveling in the summer months. It was a bigger deal than I realized.
What kind of bike are you going to ride, that can make a big difference.
Enjoy the trip, and I can let you know of some points of interest along the way depending on your route

I've always wanted to ride Route 66. It would be a haul from BR to Chicago, then from LA back. Never wanted to take the time to do it. I know I'll regret it someday.

Agreed on the second rider.
My sons first cross country trip and he did just fine.
When you see signs that say "WARNING NO SERVICES FOR THE NEXT 100 miles" they mean just that.
Having a second rider at least through the open country was nice. But many parts can be done alone if you are not an idiot.
If you can't service your own bike, or at least partially service it, LEARN HOW TO.

I met a guy at a gas station in Fairbanks, AK who had ridden a BMW from Ohio. He saw the LA plates on my car, so we compared notes on our trips. His goal was to ride up the Dalton Hwy to Deadhorse, which was another 500 miles or so. In 2002, all but about 50 mikes of it was dirt. It's maintained pretty well, but it was still a dirt road.
He had customized his bike and added some add'l fuel capacity and these saddlebag/pannier kind of deals on the sides for storage. He was already pretty squirrelly and admitted to pretty much having had enough, but he only had a few hundred miles left, so he was finishing as planned.
I saw him a couple of days later in Deadhorse. This poor bastard was covered in shite from head to toe. They use some kind of binding agent to keep the dust down, but when it gets wet, it gets on everything and dries like gunite. He was missing one of his saddlebags. It stuck out further than he was used to and he had hit a bollard at a gas station. He truly looked miserable. I gave him a beer and tried to cheer him up. How many people ever see Deadhorse Alaska? Not many. How many ride a motorcycle from Ohio? None! Just you, dude! You're one of a kind, you've got lifetime bragging rights, etc.
He wasn't having any of it. He was speculating on how much he could get for his bike and what a last minute airfare back to Ohio would cost. Hopefully, after a long hot shower and a good night's sleep, he recovered psychologically. But when I left him, he looked like he was about to start crying.

Sure, being at a station in life where one can take a month off to travel and see the country is trashy. I'll take it.

Sounds miserably awesome! Always wanted to do a ride up to Alaska and then take the ferry back down. Unfortunately, was never able to find enough time when I lived in Washington.
