Any of you fellas ever built a batting cage? Looking for the cheapest route. Needs to be strong enough for high school kids.

Thanks. Because I wasn't sure if I needed posts and a net.

You looking at building it yourself?
From my research the most expensive part by a long ways and the netting. I was looking into it and was going to build my own framing but for a 55' long cage for sale form an individual for $350 and it included the pitching screen. Couldn't pass it up.
You can get netting from the shrimp docks is what I was told but hadn't looked much in to it.

you don't need nets, just tie fishing twine to all your balls

Yeah, gonna build it myself. I have access to some drill stem... planning to use that for the posts. Was looking for ideas about the netting and best way to attach it to the frame.

Buy the post and the net separately....net is the expensive part, we bought the nets that fishing boats use

The Net Company in jonesville La. They have everything you need

What I was planning was using pipe and cables to hang the netting.

What would be the ideal length and width of the cage. Will be throwing live-arm, no machine.
Concerned that if I don't have 60'6" it will throw the hitters off when they play in a real game.

Good netting is expensive, but can be bought from Fish Net Company
You also need to put it in the open where leaves, limbs, and pine straw won't get on it and dry rot the netting.
Think about the other items you would need (L-screen, Tees, mat to stand on, concrete or grass)
My recommendation is, unless you KNOW your kid will use it daily and has a chance to play at the next level... just drive to the school and use theirs. Otherwise it will be an unused, dilapidated eye sore within 4 years and will have cost you a good sum of money.

for some reason I read "battling" cage...which would have been a far more interesting topic.
Two go in, one comes out.

O rings on an ultra tight bungee strap.

as stated above my cage is 55' and we're into softball. I pitch live arm but only pitch from about 20' away from the batter to recreated the timing of the pitch. no way I could pitch from 40+ feet consistently with the correct speed.
I want to hang another screen in the middle of my cage an create to hitting sections.
Also the longer you got the more expensive the netting. width is about 14' and that is very comfortable
