This is really all the dude can do politically. He can't just cave straight up. My guess that he's hoping he can deflect negative economic fallout as "Trump's Fault" but that's a very risky gambit.

My guess is, he weights the effects of whatever Trump chooses to do and then tries to come up with a way to "win win" at least on the surface.

Frankly, I think that's what Trump wants him to do. It's pretty common in negotiations when your opponent has key stakeholders to try and create a situation where you get most of what you want while letting your opponents look OK to his stakeholders. And, interestingly, the best way to do that is to go for the jugular out of the gates.

To use simple terms. If you want A thru E and you just ask for that. Your opponent looks like a schmuck to his stakeholders. No. You ask for A thru M and act like you'll take nothing less. When you settle on A thru E, your opponent can go tell his stakeholders he kicked your arse. And what do you care? His stakeholders aren't your stakeholders.

What exactly stops China from stepping in to fill the void and creating a very strong ally directly neighboring the U.S.?

This guy is trying to play politics in an effort to put forth a certain image to the Mexican people. Meanwhile, he is only going to make conditions worse for the Mexican people. We aren't going to let the interests and egos of Mexico's leadership or people influence our domestic and trade policies anymore. It's going to take awhile for some of these folks to understand that this is happening and there's nothing they can do about it. In the mean time, they will continue to hurt themselves and their own people by trying to play games that they think will force Trump to back down. They still don't realize that Trump is not like the previous American presidents in this respect and that the political environment has changed drastically across the Western world.

Oh well, learn the hard way.

Good. Now he should:
1. Cut off all trade and aide with Mexico immediately.

2. Order military to begin preparations for armed conflict.

3. Continue with wall construction

4 Close all points of entry from Mexico

5. Ignore all Mexican Government communication attempts for at least 6 months.

China is next.

This is the dumbest shite I've read on here in quite some time.

I'm sure we invest heavily in the Philippines and other countries because of their ability to give us things back and not their proximity to other countries we may end up fighting...

Next step is to announce some form of penalty against Mexico, because the President better not be bluffing.

Trump is not Obama. He got this. No worries.

This guy gets it. Trump has been doing that all during the campaign....He will make an outrageous statement like "Ban all Muslims" then walks it back to something more reasonable.

They will come back to the table on this as long as Trump doesn't humiliate them.

Because China needs our markets the same as Mexico, would be my guess.

You talking about products from Mexico made for Americans by American companies or those Mexican jumping beans found at most of our southern border states gift shops?

Politicos and progs lack common sense and negotiating skills.

I imagine the new CNN talking point will be OMGOHNOES we lost good relations with our friend Mexico; while it's okay for Obama to give HAMAs monies and pardon a terrorist. Stop the presses-- faux clutching of Toddy's pearls.
