I have always thought that FJM treads the line between a lovable cynic and pretentious bastard.

I wanted to like him at first, but I lean towards judging him as a pretentious douchebag. Reminds me of the art school kids who didn't try hard enough at sounding good because they were above it all.

Excited about this record

I didn't get into his last record but liked Pure Comedy single when I heard.

Dude killed it on SNL.

FJM is a huge dbag that makes mediocre music. I do enjoy his new stuff though.

Hope I don't upset some of the fanboys on here like marfa

quote:

Tillman grew up in an Evangelical Christian. . .

Before Tillman settled on a career as a musician, he briefly had ambitions of becoming a pastor because of the performance aspect[18] when he was approximately six years old.[19] He comments that his parents focused on the spiritual aspects of his upbringing, which he describes as "culturally oppressive". . . .

Tillman was raised in a Baptist church and attended an Episcopal elementary school, but by fifth grade he found himself enrolled in a Pentecostal Messianic Jewish day school.[20] Tillman said he was naive when he was growing up because there was almost no cultural influence and no secular music allowed. Around the age of 17, there were new stipulations from his parents – he was allowed to listen to secular music that had a "spiritual theme". So his early purchases included albums like Bob Dylan's Slow Train Coming as he was able to establish that Dylan was classified as a "Christian artist".[15]

nice - First half was great, with big succulent bits

and (the following) a second half of what first appeared a near angry polemic wit, was not near as agnostic on third take it, as he seems to come full circle apologetics (of his own take) by the end.

Their religions are the best
They worship themselves but they’re totally obsessed
With risen zombies, celestial virgins, magic tricks
In these unbelievable outfits
And they get terribly upset
If you question their sacred texts
Written by woman-hating epileptics

Their languages just tend to confuse them
Their confusion somehow makes them more sure
Now they’re much too bright for the old superstitions
But they’re yet to find a new one they won’t serve

Where did they find these clowns they elected to rule them
They recline in outrage at the
These mammals are hell-bent on fashioning new gods
So they can go on being godless animals

Listened to it last and will have to listen to it again. First impression is that other that "Total Entertainment Forever", it sounds like one long "Bored in the USA". That's not a bad thing but I wish there would have been a few more upbeat tracks. Will take me a few listens to digest it.

I think it has enough interesting stuff.

Smoochie is the most radio friendly IMO

Ballad of the dying man is super easy on the ear

Magic Mountain is amazing

I like Pure Comedy a lot better than Real Love Baby. RLB is just kinda boring.

I think that was pretty much his aim.

From his website:

"all LP pre-orders (both deluxe and standard editions) will include a bonus 7” featuring the single “Real Love Baby” b/w “Rejected Generic Pop Song, March ‘15 #3”."

I tend to agree. I mean, it's still really good, it just kind of runs together with the same tempo throughout. It could use a couple of change of pace tracks.

Agree completely. At some point, every slow paced song after the other on this album just reinforces how "talky" the whole thing is. His lyrics are amazing in moderate doses but this kind of just annoys me.

Picked up the vinyl from my local store. Can't wait to spin. After streaming it once, I tend to agree about it being too Bored in the USA-ish, but I still dug it. I am sure it will grow on me immensely like ILYHB did.
