Build a wall between Mexico and California.
Where there is a demand for drugs there will be a supply. They will go under the wall, over the wall and around the wall. We have fought the war on drugs for over 40 years and spent more than 1 trillion dollars, it is a war that cannot be won but no elected politician will ever admit such a thing.

If a person is addicted to heroin, crack, meth, or whatever drug and you take them off of it and then put them on methadone or another drug are you giving them a crutch to come off of everything or just swapping their addiction habits to something else?
You can generally get off methadone in a year if done properly.
Kratom can end your withdrawals in a couple months if done properly.
But, you're right. Addiction is a disease, and it is in the mind. I don't want to offend anyone with the battle or a family member who is addicted, but they must want to help themselves.
80% of people in rehab are there for opiates.

Good luck. It won't mean shite in this state for another 30 years.

What do you think the chances are that medical marijuana would get serious consideration? As much as I think it's a great alternative to opioid medicine, I just have a feeling that it won't ever get serious consideration by the folks in Montgomery.

Propose addiction be considered a pre-existing condition and once a person seeks help they won't be able to get insurance. Suddenly Obamacare will have a lot of supporters.
yeah a great way to get people to seek help. Liberal line of thinking right here. "frick your health. Obamacare is the best."

I think the good lord I have an aversion towards opiates....nausea, shakes and itchy skin made the prescribed use unusable. I wish I would have had acces to MM at that time.. I've had a few other injuries where opiates were prescribed and I never filled them instead opting for pot.. while it may not have given full relief it was manageable without the side effects

Please get the AMA and APA on board before taking large steps with respect to more hoops to jump through for scripts. It's becoming increasingly difficult to take care of actual patients and any adjustments should be done with legitimate patients at the forefront of thought.

Not with that defeatist, assumptive attitude.

Honestly, I expect it in the next four years.
Through my few contacts, there are rumblings that the legislature is quietly considering it. All it takes is education.

I would post a witty response but my fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome is really bad today

Thank you for your input.
Hadn't even considered it, but as I mentioned, I have a policy background. Committee will be filled with doctors.

Drug problem. Popular answer, more drugs.
Like that's ever worked, or ever could.
I'd start with jacking the penalties for distribution up, way up. Over a certain threshold, death.
After all, they're peddling death.

Don't neglect pharmacists as we are the ones who typically have to enforce the hoops.

My proposed solutions are:
Kratom
Medical Marijuana
Decriminalized drugs
These are all good solutions. But you're in Alabama so you just as well throw those solutions in the trash. No matter the evidence or the logic, the only solutions acceptable will be:
1. Make painkillers ever harder to get
2. Increase penalties for heroin

This is the kind of closed minded response OP will have to deal with. This is why the ruinous drug war continues to no end.
