I think they should get rewarded with an automatic playoff berth, not home field. The other team won more games.

So you wanna reward a team like the Raiders who had a record of 12-4 but only 1 regular season win over a playoff team?

What if one team would have been the 2 seed if they were in a different division and the other team had no teams with a winning record inside of their division?

Im confused are you saying both teams are #1 seeds? cause if so they wouldn't be playing in the wildcard against each other

This is not the Raiders fault.

by giving home field advantage to the team who came in second in their division because they have a better record is basically creating 2 divisional winners from one division and 0 from the other

Only because you have it in your head that a division winner should host a playoff game. There's no measure that says the Texans were better than the Raiders other than the Texans won the AFC South.

Yes. The team with the better regular season record should get the home game.

Why do wins over playoff teams matter in the slightest?

ETA: It's strange that "better record gets home field" is being forcded to defend its rationality. It's objectively the more rational format. Open your mind to the possibility that the current format might not be the best format. It can be improved.

If you think the Texans were better than the Raiders through the regular season and deserved to host them, then you are delusional

Teams who win their division should get rewarded even if they have a worse overall record
They do, they are guaranteed a playoff spot.

Yes.

It's much less outlandish than awarding a team with a losing record.

With the exception of disqualifying sub .500 teams from the playoffs I wouldn't change the NFL playoff format.

That rarely happens. And when it does it's almost always (if not always) a division winner.

Agree that it rarely happens (unlike the NBA) but the fact that it is a division winner doesn't seem relevant when they had to be below .500 out of division to win the division and finish below .500.

Schedules are not directly comparable but the idea of the playoffs is to see the best teams play for a championship. You aren't in the discussion for best team if you list more games than you won.

Keep the seeding the way it is now 1-6 (division winners 1-4, wild card 5-6) so that the match ups stay the same. However, if 5 or 6 has a better record than 3 or 4 they should get to host. Same idea (if necessary) for AFC and NFC championship games if by chance 2 teams from wild card weekend make it.

I like it the way it is. Don't need anymore .500 teams getting in.

Yep. Have group play where each division plays a round robin with all games hosted by the higher seed. Then the top two in each division advance to the knockout round.

The only thing wrong with the NFL format is seeding. Winning the division should guarantee you a spot not a home game. Seeding needs to be based on record. Sadly it's not going to happen until it negatively affects a popular team.
