Six years ago, Bill Belichick told Falcons not to move up to draft Julio Jones

As the Atlanta Journal Constitution shared on Tuesday, Peter King recently reviewed Michael Holley’s book, “War Room: The Legacy of Bill Belichick and the Art of Building the Perfect Team.” One of the more interesting stories Holley talks about deals with Julio Jones. According to the book, Dimitroff called Belichick the day of the draft and asked if he thought it would be a good idea to trade up 21 spots to get the Alabama receiver. Belichick advised against making the move.
Belichick recommended staying put at No. 27 and drafting Pittsburgh’s Jonathan Baldwin, but Dimitroff went ahead and pulled the trigger on the deal anyway.

It would be ironic if Julio ends up having a monstrous game to lead the Falcons to a win over the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Belichick knew Hogan would someday prove to be the superior option at WR, but Hogan wasn't on ATL's board.
Julio was.
Julio was.

Like Belichick would ever give honest helpful advice to a potential opponent.

wtf is he supposed to tell these guys how to draft?

I mean, they were thin rostered for years after that, and 6 years later they have filled out the rest of the roster to compete finally.
Seems a little late for a told ya so

And 2 weeks from now Belichick will have another superbowl trophy. But nice story.

Dimitroff was a scouting director in New England before becoming GM for the Falcons.

Ehh, "finally" is a little hyperbolic. They've been in the playoffs 3/6 years with Julio and probably should've won the conference in 2012 but shite the bed against the niners

Two door dilemma of logical deduction.
Always do the opposite of what Belichick says.

Fun stats:
Baldwin was picked one spot before #27 so the Falcons would have missed out on him if they stayed pat.
Baldwin has career stats of 44 catches, 607 yards, 2 TDs.
The top 7 picks in 2011 were all pretty damn incredible.
Cam Newton
Von Miller
Marcell Dareus
AJ Green
Patrick Peterson
Julio Jones
Aldon Smith (when he isn't suspended)
Hell, outside of the QBs that everyone knew were picked too high you have to go all the way to pick 21 to find someone who didn't really pan out (depends if you consider Prince Amukamara a bust or not and Adrian Claybourn is pretty good when he is healthy) and of course it is the Browns pick of Phil Taylor.

6 years later when a draft pick is in his prime is too late for a told you so? That's exactly when you'd expect the "told you so" to take place and it worked out perfectly.

I have no knowledge about Dimitroff as a person but I would love to beat the shite out of him

Agree and it was a very risky move. I hated it at the time. It has worked out but it was a total risk move

i mean Bill B has a pretty good track records of building good offenses without over-drafting WRs
this isn't really an indictment of Bill B b/c he's proven his philosophy works in the long run
*ETA: he learned his lesson with chad jakcson

Belicheck didn't tell him "don't draft Julio because he sucks". He said "don't mortgage your future to land one elite player, play back and give the roster depth"
Which he's advice was right about for the first 5 years of his career, because the falcons didn't gain back the depth to compete consistently until now after a complete overhaul in the scouting department as well
