The lost art of the QB sneak

Since 2000, QB sneaks with a yard or less to gain have resulted in a first down or TD 84% of the time, over 20% more than traditional runs in the same circumstance.
I find it shocking how neglected this play is in today's NFL. Every single game first downs and TDs are lost due to some mythical fear of QB injury on this play.
If the Steelers just let their tank of a QB get 12 inches this game is 17-13 right now.

Refusing to take 12 inches is never a problem in Aggie Land.

Brady runs the QB sneak better than anyone else in the league IMO.
Most teams avoid it I think because they don't want their QBs to get hurt, but I totally get your point.

I remember when 05 USC used to run it and get 5 yards

Flacco used to do it, but now we're never in that position because our offense sucks. Sigh.

When was the last time you saw a QB get seriously hurt on a sneak?
I've been watching college and NFL football for 22 years and off the top of my head can't remember a single significant injury on the play. It's a phantom fear.

Tom Savage earlier this year jumps to mind. But I agree that it's an irrational fear.

Matt Schaub broke his foot on a QB sneak a few years back. I think it was a Lisfranc fracture.

If people are worried about QBs getting hurt they should just have a TE that has practiced snaps behind center.

Only one I can remember is Colt McCoy in 06 against Kansas State, but I completely agree it's a phantom fear. I just think that's why some teams don't use it.
Biggest thing is most defenders hitting you aren't coming in with a head of steam. It's all just push at the line so the QB is less likely to get blasted.

Owners and coaches probably are against anything that could hurt a franchise QB

But they leave their franchise qb in the game with a 20 point lead and 3:00 left.

Fun fact.
Randall Cunningham ran for 101 1st downs as a QB.
Tom Brady? 181.
All time leader? Mike Vick, 342
Peyton? 76.

I don't think it's so much the fear of getting the QB hurt as it is the QB fumbling. Let's remember that most NFL QBs aren't the greatest ball carriers

Dak's run a few sneaks this year. He's damn good ball carrier.
