This is a good option. I was there for work, but had a few days to explore (and each night). I enjoyed wandering alone. That said, I've never felt awkward doing those things alone on a trip.
Yep I don't mind travelling alone honestly.

I'm in the same boat... Gotta use 5 vacation days before the end of March or I lose em.
Someone mentioned going to Hawaii solo which I thought was interesting.
Any thoughts on a Hawaii solo trip?

Contingent upon you liking snow and knowing how to ski, I think skiing alone would be great. Can relax and not worry about keeping up/keeping track of skiers you'd typically be traveling with. I hate having to stop when skiing to try to communicate with people on what trail we're taking next, etc.
Can sightsee and hike there too, along with other excursions.

I had a car and a tent and spent a couple weeks solo in Hawaii last year. Went in Feb and weather was great. Did Oahu and Kauai. Plenty of stuff to do on both islands. I'd prolly do Mauai or Big Island instead of Oahu if I had the time, just was easier since had to fly into Honolulu anyways.
I've done a bunch of trips by myself over the years. Hostelled mostly which I prolly wouldn't do as much now but always had a blast and met some interesting people that I'm still friends with today. Once you get over the initial barrier it's pretty easy and even preferred unless you're traveling with the right person. For the first trip Belize is pretty easy. English speaking, good time of the year right now. San Ignacio is a really neat place a lot of people skip over. Can hit one of the islands after that. Much prefer Caye Caulker over Ambergris Caye, and if you're not scuba certified it's relatively cheap to do

More of a beach, exploration, sight seeing person.
I would start knocking out National Parks one by one. Spending a few days in each.

Learn to ride a motorcycle and take big road trips. The trips I have taken on my bikes are some of the best moments of my life. You meet a lot of interesting people and feel like you see a lot more than any car road trip.

I enjoy going on vacation alone. Do what I want, how I want and when I want. No need to feel out of place. I think you'll be surprised at how many are on a trip solo

I'd stay in Jackson hole and hit up grand targhee and Teton village as a snowboarder, plus there's a pretty solid food scene.. My gf isn't much of skiier so I could probably facilitate taking the vaca without her

I was thinking of some others reading through the thread
-Chicago is pretty fun and I go all the time by myself for a few days (even though I know quite a few people living there), still enjoyable regardless. Just walking around the city is good enough for me.
-Colorado (even outside Denver) is neat. I enjoy the hikes in the mountains.

Washington DC sounds like a good idea, and I'd add New York City also. You can just wander around the city for days sightseeing, probably get more done being solo. Check out a game or watch one from a local bar.

I attended a work conference in Honolulu and stayed a few days after the conference to explore and play golf. I had a blast. Paired me up with some funny Koreans on the golf course and some other ex-Cali guys.
Btw, I've taken numerous trips to Vegas alone. It's the only way to do Vegas.

I've been to some of the exact same places by myself and with family at different times. Hawaii, Washington D.C., San Francisco, New Orleans, Miami, and St. Louis are a few examples.
I like the National Parks and Washington D.C. recommendations, but really pretty much anything outside a purely family oriented venue is going to be good; we're eclectic as a society so you can feel at home solo just about anywhere.
Just think of it as a way to supplement your family trips and what I usually do is try and do things that I like to do but would not get to do if it was a family trip. I usually do a lot of walking or biking that I'm not going to do if it was a family vacation. Or engage in an activity like fishing which I'm not going to get to do on a family trip. Basically enjoy the freedom you have to decide to do what it is you want to do and believe me people aren't going to pay much attention as to why you are traveling alone: There will be many people traveling who will be just like you.
The main thing I've noticed when traveling alone is I'll go on the cheap and eat cheap and stay at cheap places that I'd never do with family. That way you can save your money to explore the sites and spend it on other things relating to your trip.

What are the best places?

Take a look at Road Scholar, they do tours all over the world and often the travelers are doing it solo. They also tend to be older so not sure whether that is a plus or minus for you. I'm planning to take a few trips with them in a couple of years when I've got the time.

Going on a cruise alone this April. Flying to Orlando to get on the ship in port canaveral, goes to two spots in the Bahamas and then back to port canaveral. It's only a 4 day cruise but I can't wait to get away and relax by the pool drinking and just take it easy

If you are into history and willing to travel alone expand your options to include Normandy. I went alone (wife couldn't come on business trip I had to Amersfoort, NL) and I got way more out of the trip by doing things in Normandy that I wanted to do. I'd recommend Bayeux as a home base if you decide to do it. Flights to Paris aren't too bad, or you can fly to AMS and train to Par.
