A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent was shot multiple times while conducting a traffic stop Saturday morning.
According to the LDWF, Senior Agent Tyler Wheeler, 26, pulled over a vehicle on Hwy 165 between Sterling and Bastrop around 2:06 a.m. During the stop, the person inside the vehicle pulled out a gun and shot wheeler multiple times.
Another LDWF agent arrived on the scene minutes later and found Wheeler on the ground, the shooter had fled the scene according to the agency. EMS was called to the scene and stabilized Wheeler before airlifting him to LSU Health Shreveport Trauma Center. Wheeler's condition is currently unknown.
Wheeler has been an LDWF agent for two-and-a-half years and is married with one child, according to the agency.
Louisiana State Police are handling the investigation into his shooting with assistance from the LDWF. No suspect has been named at this time.

off topic ignorant question: why is a LDWF agent engaging in a traffic stop on roads?
Posted on 1/7/17 at 10:10 am to SlowFlowPro
Not sure. Also at 2:00 in the am

Well they could have been stopping someone for DWF violation (i.e. road hunting). Also LDWF agents are, in believe, full peace officers allowed to issue violations for any laws.
I thought in some rural parishes they assistwith routine police tasks.

Pulling over a possible poacher?
ETA: it's fairly common for them to make traffic stops regarding LDWF violations or even DUIs

I believe they can do that. Stop might have been due to the road conditions.

I mean you see someone driving down the road with what appears to be illegal game in the back, you can stop 'em.

He has all of the jurisdictional power of a Trooper and will make stops if it is relevant to his duties.. maybe he saw them coming from a wooded area after hearing gunshots (poaching) or he saw them with a deer strapped on the roof of their car. Either way prayers to his family.

Holy shite. He must have been conscious enough to give a description.
VERY SORRY for your family to have to go through this. What kind of person does that?
