Turning your home into a "smart" home, pros and cons?

I purchased some door locks, wall outlets, and a thermostat over Christmas to turn my home into more of a "smart" home.
From the description the outlets I just need to remove and screw these in, didn't say if I needed a special hook up or not. The thermostat I have a guy coming to install because I don't know what needs to be done.
Kinda looking forward to being able to control everything from my phone. Already have the security system from ADT and I need to call them to come out when the door locks come in.

I thought this would be cool too, but decided that 'smart locks' don't actually add any layer of security at all. Instead, I find it more easily breachable. Instead of smart locks, get a reliable lockset (Kwikset) and maybe add a Ring Doorbell for that added layer of security and is still 'smart'.

Which locks do you have? I have Schlage locks on 4 exterior doors and couldn't be happier. When added to a hub I have the ability to set the locks to lock at a given time or to lock when a certain activity happens. Previously I would often forget to lock a door and now this is not possible. Well worth the money to me.

Pro it's cool as shite. Con it's as addicting and expensive as shite.

what are you expecting? the chances of someone hacking the lock are much less than someone just kicking the door in or busting a window.

You realize that this lock is just a keypad lock, right? It doesn't have any wireless capability (Wi-Fi, Z-wave, Zigbee, etc) to connect to your smartphone.
Nonetheless, it's a great lock. I had installed the kwikset in your link at my front door but recently, upgraded to this, which has wireless capabilities:

Jokes on him, I don't own a stereo... Just a Bluetooth speaker

I am looking into joining the connected crowd. A question I have with respect to connected lights, locks, and everything else is how do these work when the power goes out. The Wink hub does not have a battery backup but the Samsung smart hub does, is this a minor issue or should this be a major concern?

They work just like any other electrical device when a home loses power.

You can swap the thermostat in five minutes. Save the $100 you'd pay someone to do it and buy something else with it. I'm the most unhandy husband on the planet and I figured it out within a few minutes and had ours online.

You would need battery backup if you have security set up such as door sensors and sirens.

how so? mine automatically lock the 4 exterior doors i have EVERY NIGHT and with 6 total people in my house its the only way i know the house is properly secured for the night.
if any of them are unlocked after that time, my phone on the nightstand tells me that too and which one.

HA Levels:
Level 1: Isn't it neat i can turn my thermostats up and down and lock doors from my phone
Level 2: Isn't it nice i can schedule my thermostats and door locking automatically
Level 3: I am ONE with my house and my lights, door locks and thermostat respond to me and not via rigid schedule or via 'glorified phone remote control' by monitoring my movements, temperature in various rooms and when everyone has exited the house.
you must become ONE with Level 3 to begin to have a truly smart home.

At what level do you start integrating security, audio, video ? Build scenes ?

Level 3 right? This is where you start to adapt your HA doodads to your lifestyle.

Can someone link me to a good thread on this board to help me start off with HA? I'm ready to do this to my home but not sure where to begin.
