at the end of the cycle, the bottom remains filled with water.

There should be a screen in the bottom that catches a bunch of crap from inside. Check that, it could be blocking the drainage. If not, then you may have a clogged drain pipe I would guess.

I don't know anything about fixing dishwashers, but sounds likes you have a clogged drain pipe.

Tell your wife she should replace her tampon every so often.

look for a kink in the drain pipe

You may have heavy water.

Sounds like your "dishwasher" is getting BBC'd while you're at work.

Someone forgot to knock out the plug on the return
Remove the flexible hose and try to put your finger in the hole, you won't be able to
Put a screw driver in there and tap with a hammer until plug is freed

It's been working for 3 yrs. I understand about the drain pipe, but would that make it "overflow" on the next cycle? Somehow it would have the same level of water in the bottom if I ran another cycle.
How does it drain at all. Also, there is a "drain" button. Light comes on, water still there after.
Screen is clean (now)

Sometimes they drain into your garbage disposal. Check disposal for clogs.

Also should be a check valve inline to prevent backflow.

The mf'er is built in to the cabinet so all I can get to in inside washer, and drain hose comes out of a small hole in sidewall and runs to my disposal. Disposal working fine.

Get a new dishwasher. They're cheap enough just to toss the old one out. Head down to Home Depot and look around. There are all kinds of dishwashers just standing around outside to pick from.

I had a mystery with water intermittently being in bottom. Replaced the inlet valve ($30) and all is well. 15min job

That sucks, you need to figure out if it's a plumbing problem or mechanical. A new dishwasher might be cheaper than a plumber who tells you to replace the dishwasher.

That's what I'd do but I don't know much about dishwashers. It might be a horrible idea, but new dishwashers are cheaper than plumbers that tell you to buy a new dishwasher anyway lol.

You can unscrew it and pull the dw to take a look.
