Ebony pronounced: eb?ne
Never understood why it didn't sound similar to the related word "Ebonics", which is pronounced: e'bäniks
Why isn't it pronounced: e'bän-e

In reality, "gif" is one of those words that I avoid saying aloud like the plague. I usually stumble through saying it with a soft g, repeat it with a hard g, and then follow it up by saying "or however the hell you say it." It is a train wreck.
This is very similar to the way I handle it too
I would frick up the 3rd syllable in incoherent for quite a while.
How you pronounce "niche" sets people off

Love this word. Beats the hell out of the common law "life estate" for being able to quickly determine what the word means.

It drives me crazy to hear people say "Heigth" when it is "Height"

Renovate. Pronounced it Ree-inovate for decades. Said it in conversation with an old fling & she responded with "what the frick did you just say?", and proceeded to blow my mind.

Seriously. Not much in civil law is more straightforward. I remember when the Prof explained it meant usus and fructus, and boom, that's it.

I have heard, from intelligent people:
Supposebly
Idear
Written - Statue instead of statute
My dad is driven crazy by dah-tah, instead of day-tah. Comes from the latin word datum, pronounced day-tem.
And I say GIF with a hard G

I once knew a guy who got three words mixed up when describing the properties of motor oil: Viscosity + Velocity + Elasticity. He called it "Velosticity".
Of course, the grand prize goes to realtors who pronounce their own chosen profession as "Ree-lah-tor".
