Dozens evicted from low-income units at American Can complex

NEW ORLEANS -- Michael Esnault and his partner Anne Tucker have lived in the American Can Apartments building for the past six years, but they’ll soon be former tenants – through no choice of their own.
They recently found a note taped to their door notifying them that they had until the end of December to vacate their apartment.

Dozens of families are losing their leases at the Mid-City apartment building as the operators phase out all of their subsidized and low-income units.
quote:
The American Can was built in part with government subsidies, including $29 million in tax-exempt bonds.
Those bonds required the owner to keep 20 percent of the units for affordable housing for a minimum of 15 years.
That requirement expires at the end of January.
Those tenants are now losing their leases.
quote:
"The rent is totally outrageous," Esnault said. "There's no cap on it. I mean, the people who live in New Orleans were born here. We won't be able to stay here anymore."
"If you're making $733 a month in (Supplemental Security Income), it used to be you could get a $400-, $450-, $500-a-month apartment, but you can't anymore in the city," Adams said. "There is very little affordable housing."
Attorney Randy Opotowsky who represents ACV told WWL-TV seven residents are losing their leases by the end of January. He said the rest of the low-income leases will be phased out over time.

I have friends who live in that building. Super nice and definitely trendy. A 570 square foot apartment costs $1050. It's kinda cruel that this is happening right around the holidays. I'm interested to hear the poli board's thoughts.

The builder/owner fulfilled his part of the deal. There's no obligation to continue.

It's a Christmas Miracle!

But you can walk to Parkway. That has to be worth something.

The company has the right to do that. If the property management company can get more per month for these units then more power to them. It is supply and demand.
Do I think they could have handled it better?
It is hard to say without knowing the whole story from both sides.
Would I do it to people that rent from me?
No, unless my cost got to a point I had to go up.
At that point I would try to work with my tenants to find an affordable place to rent.

It's government housing not your housing, get out.

the only thing they could have done was give notice earlier
which would mean that the protesters would be out in full fricking force for months
there is no other option in the time of these stupid protests

Nothing wrong with doing it. However whoever is the pr person should be fired for letting them do this a week before Christmas.

A person doesn't make Supplemental Security Income. Its given to them.
Take would be a better choice of wordage.

I really hate the dependent class in this country. There are other places they could choose to live just fine.

I don't get the love for Parkway. You can walk to the Bayou, which is worth more imo.

Yep, we should probably just euthanize the disabled vets mentioned in the article.

Price controls don't work, ever, whether it's for rent, healtcare, or foodstuffs. It's just plain economic illiteracy.

This is common. They've fulfilled their obligations and the affordable housing restrictions have expired. The article is a little misleading. Sure, government bonds were used to financing the acquisition and/or construction of the building. But the owners have to repay those bonds. It's not like the government "gave" them millions of dollars. If tax credits were involved, they likely had a LP that was involved, and they typically exit these deals after 15 years (when the credits run out and the losses are dried up).

they can move
living in New Orleans is not a right
all that they're complaining about is having to move out of the city

You know they'll find a way to blame this on Trump

I hate that for them, but that's life. I would love to live close to downtown, but I can't afford a $700,000+ house. So you find somewhere affordable and you make it work. Too many people with entitlement issues.
If he fulfilled his requirements and he has the opportunity to make more money, good for him. Welcome to America baby! Where we have the ability to choose where we live (even if it's not ideal) and choose where/how we work to provide for our families.
