“There will be a tax on our soon to be strong border of 35 percent for these companies wanting to sell their product, cars, A.C. units etc., back across the border,” Mr. Trump said in a series of Twitter messages over the weekend.

House Republican leaders — in a major policy break with President-elect Donald J. Trump — signaled on Monday that they would not support his threat to impose a heavy tax on companies that move jobs overseas, the first significant confrontation over conservative economic orthodoxy that Mr. Trump relishes trampling.

“I don’t want to get into some kind of trade war,” Representative Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California and majority leader, told reporters in response to Mr. Trump’s threats over the weekend to seek a 35 percent import tariff on goods sold by United States companies that move jobs overseas and displace American workers.

Well, let's just hope that their seats go to more conservative republicans instead of democrats.

Because if they're making a stand against Trump trying to keep jobs in the USA, they will get crushed in their next elections.

Reality alert!
Trump is not yet POTUS. The 115th United States Congress has not been seated.

Good! Biggest (and maybe only) reservation I had with trump is his stance on trade. Fortunately, the Democrats don't control Congress, so his anti-trade stances would never come to fruition.

Smart political move by Trump.

He knows it would be difficult to get congress to approve such a ridiculous tariff, but Trump knows congress will come off as the bad guys and some may be forced to side with Trump to uphold their approval rating.

Most Americans know very little about economics and are unable to comprehend the theories behind free markets and free trade.

The economic ignorance of Democrats has been apparent for decades, but after Trump's nomination as the GOP nominee, its obvious that Republicans aren't so conservative either.

This board's approval of such a disastrous proposal is also quite alarming. Its funny how not one of you mentioned the idea of excessive tariffs before Trump came around.

You cowards didn't hesitate to throw your principles of "limited government" and "free market capitalism" out the window when a passionate nationalist with false hope came knocking.

You fascists are just as pathetic as socialists. You both turn to the government to solve your problems instead of solving them yourself like men.

The very first law passed by the Congress under the new Constitution with the prodding of Alexander Hamilton was a tariff act that protected American workers.

The 35% tariff is just dumb. I am trying to envision a scenario where companies aren't leaving the country en made right before the tariff goes up to avoid it.

And if it is on any American company that already left, then he is going to decimate American businesses who left. Those business will have to raise their prices on everything and it will hurt consumers.

It also does nothing to affect foreign companies who now get to sell their good in America without the 35% tariff.

Your thread title is a lie. They literally cited two reps, neither of which stated how they would vote on the issue.

Well if those hardcore alt right California republicans oppose it, it's surely doomed by the rest.

So do y'all believe in capitalism and free trade or bigger government involvement in business?

So confused by this board.
