Joe Alleva is the correct answer. He has obviously built a very bad reputation for himself and LSU. He has mishandled everything he has touched in terms of coaching hires and management.

We all need to get behind Coach O and pray he is successful, despite our horrible administration.

Alleva did not have a plan beyond Fisher and Herman. Kinda sad that we had a 2 month head start on everyone else and all we came up with on our search list were 2 head coaches, 1 of which already turned us down last year.

but Fedora as well.
Every UNC site I looked at the past few months said Fedora was gone if LSU would have offered.

I just think LSU didn't want to take the hit in recruiting unless they were getting the top dog.

Retain O dirt cheap with no buyout, keep the recruiting pipelines going. If he does well, great. If he doesn't, we move on, but the team is still loaded.

It's not the way I would have gone, but I think this had to factor in their minds.

Simply because "sites" say he'd be gone, does not make it so.
Simply because we didn't hear, in the press, that Alleva was talking to other coaches or agents (it's not the best maneuver to openly admit to talking to coaches or agents during the middle of the season...does not mean that it did not happen.

I read every other poster on here saying "there was no coaching search" or "Alleva didn't talk to anyone else" that I'm about to puke. WE DO NOT KNOW all the facts, and they won't come out anytime soon.

Prolonging the "negotiation" with Tom Herman means our guys have to wait to get on the recruiting trail with only a few days to spare.

Jesus, dude. Larry Fedora makes much less than Ed Orgeron and coaches for a school that doesn't have near the recruiting opportunities we do.

I don't really need a "site" to tell me he would have come to LSU. But this was coming from the admins of the site.

Whatever though. You guys think whatever you want.

I honestly think you began to ask your first question right out of the gate here:

quote:

and a parallel question is "how difficult is it to get an established successful HC to coach in the SEC West"

We fans get ourselves wrapped around the axle wondering why a "premiere program" like LSU couldn't attract better candidates and/or making Alleva the fall guy for LSU's inabillity to attract better candidates to such an obviously great program.

But what if coaches who, under different circumstances, would've jumped at the chance to run this program chose not to because of Bama? You can even argue that LSU, Auburn, and (maybe) A&M are the only three programs in the West that feel as if they should win the conference on a regular basis.

The rest sort of know their place in the order of things, and are more likely to snag a good coach who knows the Miss St fanbase, for example, will live with 7-8 win season in perpetuity because that's just the way it is...oh, and still get paid $4 mil or more in the process.

So, yeah, I think LSU's destination job status is compromised until Nick hangs them up.

You "assume" there was a search beyond Jimbo, Herman and O. There is zero evidence to support such a claim.

there most certainly is evidence the search went beyond those 2 candidates (fisher and herman).

1-LSU hired a search firm. there is much value in 3rd party as the agents talk more freely than directly with the "hirer".
2-LSU itself said they had vetted over a dozen prospective HC's. you may recall at one time that Fedora was strongly in the mix.

that's a lot more evidence than your narrative claiming Alleva only considered three guys. you have no evidence.

each HC's agent also has to go through his due diligence on behalf of his client. he gets paid for finding the best deal for his client; it's up to the client to say yes or not. that's why a 3rd party is so powerful in employee searches of this magnitude.

I find it impossible to believe that LSU only considered 2 guys plus O.

What went wrong was Joe Alleva saying "I am the search."

You have opened a discussion that I have been waiting to see. LSU saw that they were not going to get a reasoble deal for an elite HC or rising star they were willing to gamble on. Instead they took a new "experimental track by hiring an energetic HC that if successful will stay for low dollars. To offset the performance gap in the HC they will through the big money at the coordinators and use a three headed monster approach and run a superior effort by committee.

I have not seen this done before but one advantage is that it is un-doable in 3 yrs if they dont like it and want to move again for an elite HC.

This is a safe hedge against the stacked buyouts of CLM and a failed successor HC with big pricetag.

The other big risk on Herman was that he would be successful and leave and in the process take the whole staff with him.

The weakness of this experiment is that successful coordinators are promotable and you will have to replace them eventually

1) The first amendment doesn't protect you from the people.

2) I think while Orgeron certainly has major question marks, he has a huge upside with how people respond to him. Not only will he be great in recruiting players, but a successful Coach O will loosen the wallets of big donors.

That's hard to say. The fan base seems pretty equally split. A lot of people love him for what he represents, but others really felt like we settled.

I agree with this. Why throw money at an unproven coach(Herman), or another mid tier coach (Fedora)? Those are big risks to take for the money.

Also, LSU appears to have told coaches that Aranda will be kept. Most coaches would say no to that.

When the AD starts putting demands like that out, I would be leery of taking that job.

Alleva said he was "the search." There is no evidence to support your claim that a 3rd party firm was involved. There's also zero evidence to support the claim that Alleva seriously considered anyone other than Fisher, Herman, and Orgeron. For a hire of this magnitude, what Alleva did was a farce.
