I told my wife if she didn't take my last name, no marriage. I do not know how guys put up with this BS.

Women in their mid 30s are established career wise. People know them by their name. Changing it is a pain in the arse. I don't think it's beta at all for the guy. I wouldn't give a shite if my hypothetical wife wanted to keep her name.
Now, dudes changing their name or taking a hyphen.... That's pretty gay.

My wife didn't change hers. I couldn't care less.

She probably did it for career reasons
But in that case its very understandable, especially for doctors and lawyers where licenses are involved.
But Sally Ann Homemaker that is "above" taking her husbands last name? GTFO.

Stupid.

Seems like you have a major issue with this chick. Might be a good idea if you just skip the wedding all together.
I don't give a shite what they do. Read my original post. I asked if this was a "thing" now, and if you have to be a beta to agree to this.

Same here. She mentioned keeping her last name in a semi-serious manner during our engagement. When she heard my rebuttal, we never spoke of it again.

My wife didnt take mine for her career continuity and that it is safer for our family to have her practicing under a different name (she practices criminal law).
Who gives a shite?

I worked with a guy who's last name is Kelley and he married a gal named Kelly. She should have kept her maiden name imo. True story no BS

If she is a doctor, lawyer, famous; then I can understand as those certifications/careers are difficult to change names; if she is a school teacher or admin, frick that noise.

If she's an established doctor or other professional where her license, degrees, and all professional life is in her other name that's about the only acceptable time for this.

What if his last name sucks?
In Hispanic communities here in the US, the children are given [First Name] [Father's Surname] [Mother's Surname]. So.. Juan Garcia Gonzalez or something. The wife often does not take the last name of her husband.
Guess they're beta pussies too.

Why does it really matter though?

Sounds like such a mutually respectful and loving marriage you got going there, man.

That's what I'm wondering
Our last names literally never come up. I don't even call her by her first name much less her last one

Happens a lot if the woman is a Ph.D., or MD, and already have a legitimate practice. Her last name is worth money, if she is good.
But I agree that it quite possibly would be a deal breaker.

Was this before or after you beat her?
I gladly took my husband's last name. Did it because I'm just traditional like that. However...I don't really think it's that big a deal. To each their own.
And none of you men know what a pain in the arse it can be to change your last name fwiw.

IMO the woman is basically saying "im not fully committed to this." just to be clear im talking in general, not at these two people specifically.
also IMO, i believe that when you (man or woman) gets married, the new family you just formed becomes your number one priority. when a woman keeps her last name after she gets married, i get the impression she's more committed to her old family (mommy and daddy) than the new family she just formed. just my opinion though i know the libs feel differently.

Nuts to Butts this is about as insulting to a man's esteem as you can get.
why? I won't have to deal with this myself but I couldn't imagine it being some huge deal if it was the case.
I don't have any kind of self esteem wrapped up in my last name. I literally had nothing to do with receiving it therefore my self esteem isn't tied to it like actual accomplishments and experiences in life which is where self esteem comes from.

People can do whatever they want, but I do think it is a sign that the woman doesn't think the marriage will last or her husband to be is worth changing something important.
