Why did Alleva and Herman not sign a contact on Thursday?

Assuming there was a verbal agreement in place and mutual interest in making a deal, why wait to sign the contract? Why did Alleva not try to lock Herman up before the conclusion of the UT/TCU game?

eta: I get that Houston played on Friday, but that wouldn't have prevented a contract from being signed, would it?

Because Herman was still under contract with Houston and wouldn't walk out before his last game there.

Because Herman was only using LSU to force Texas's hand in firing Strong

Seriously? Herman wanted to hear from UT before making a decision. When he found out that they wanted him, it was over for LSU.

Herman, almost certainly, never intended to choose us over Texas. We shouldn't have wasted our time, when it became clear that Strong was on his way out.

Instead, we should have conducted an extensive, thorough coaching search and then hired the coach that gave us the best chance for future success.

You mean other than:

- it doesn't fit the facts of the situation,
- it would be a HUGE conflict of interest for Herman in which case we shouldn't want to have anything to do with him
- just for starters.

and clearly you have no idea what business discussions and negotiations are about. And ethics.

Young, uninformed, immature fools.

Grown the hell up.

They probably discussed the terms and had to have a contract drawn up. I still don't understand how so many of our fans are so naive about how deals are done and especially that Herman was using us

Contracts are rarely signed when deals are made. It typically takes weeks/months to get all the fine print done.

Herman's interest in Texas was common knowledge the entire time. Why did Alleva waste so much time with him? Why wasn't an actual search done? Why didn't Alleva make a more serious effort to get Herman? It's due to Alleva's lack a leadership and being a fricking wimpy idiot who was planning for O the whole time. Follow his history back to Duke. He has never changed.

Why would Herman agree to sign on Thursday if he really wanted to coach at Texas? That's the most obvious answer to your question.

We know now he was using LSU as leverage to get Texas to make a decision on Strong.

So, signing on Thursday was out of Alleva's control.

I'm glad. The guy is so unproven. As a coach recruiter

The whole thing reminded me of the "My word is stronger than oak" scene from Jerry McGuire.
