Nah Kurt was really trying to better himself for Frances, the addiction was just too much. Also Courtney ruined his damn life

Cobain: pathologically self-absorbed. The grunge angst = birth of the snowflake.
Though Nirvana's in my top 5 all time favorite bands, this is probably very very true. Because the truth is we all have problems and that's never changed and will never change but if you create an entire culture/echo chamber (whether it be music or social media these days) for harping on your problems and feeling sorry for yourself these problems will only manifest in our minds over time. Thus producing the snowflake.

Vetter and Cornell were around but virtually unknown outside of Seattle prior to Temple of the Dog. That's what gave them the notioriety for their bands to blow up and become national.
Nirvana was already around and becoming popular. However, without those other "grunge" bands, Nirvana is essentially a band without a genre. They're an indie act instead of the bannermen of the new genre of "grunge". Nirvana just ends up being some random Seattle band that made a few catchy songs. They get nowhere near as big. What drove their popularity was that MTV declared grunge the new thing and pimped it over metal, mostly with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, STP, and Nirvana. Without those first 2 bands, there's not enough bands to promote to declare a new genre. Nirvana is just another late 80's indie punk band.
What would really be interesting is to see what would have happened to other "grunge" acts like Alice in Chains. Would they have been billed as metal? Would they have had the same success? What happens to the 80's metal acts that seemingly disappeared in 1991? Do they still remain in the public consciousness? Does MTv still abandon them?

I'm hammered listening to Nirvana music, and can't help but think the same thing

Alice in Chains was much better than Nirvana.

He'd be on death row for killing Courtney

If Kurt hadn't suicided I may have killed him. Nirvana is turrible

Dave Grohl shot him. Didn't want to be a monkey wrench drummer the rest of his life.

This timeline is all wrong. Soundgarden started in the mid 80s. Nirvana came before Pearl Jam too. Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell were both well established stars by the time the Temple of the Dog album came out.
If I remeber correctly, the Temple of the Dog album was made before Pearl Jam became huge and if memory serves they were still called the "Mookie Blaylocks" at the time lol.
The record didn't gain much attention till after Pearl Jam and Soundgarden got big. People went back and realized it was a collaboration between the two bands and started picking it up and it got more airplay.

Kingbob, I'm glad you're not a music historian because both of your post are way off and read of a teenager reciting Wikipedia.

I think a better question is what if Andrew Wood of Mafunktion and Mother Love Bone hadn't OD'd? His death is what caused Temple of the Dog to form, which launched Eddie Vetter and Chris Cornell to prominance and spawned Pearl Jam and later Soundgarden. Without these 3 bands, the grunge movement that Nirvana became the standard barer for doesn't materialize, and Metal continues to dominate rock. Nirvana becomes a niche Seattle band with STP. Without fame, Kobain never kills himself. Foo Fighters never forms. The entire course of music is irreperably altered.
This is a bit off but his death was bigger in the grand scheme. Temple was just a tribute band of some already huge Seattle guys. Vedder was asked to sing on one song and because of that it was packaged for masses with a video and released to radio. They all hit at nearly the same time. Soundgarden was around but without Wood dying, Vedder never really comes down to Seattle. Mother Love Bone would have been the big band but I can't see them lasting either. Wood was a junkie. Pearl Jam level fame would have destroyed him spectacularly.
By the time we in SETX and SWLA found Teen Spirit, all of these things had already happened except for Cobains death of course. It was all their for us to find. You just had to find it. Everybody had one guy in their group who had a Sub Pop tape. The rest found AIC. The movie Singles hit after that and that soundtrack sent people scrambling to find out who the rest of the people were.
Cobain not dying would have been interesting. He, like Wood, was a junkie. His fall would have been spectacular with loaded shows and public appearances and stories piling up. 30 years old is not very kind to any of us, certainly not a junkie. Nirvana would break up and Cobain would divorce. The only thing up for grabs is, do these events make him go to rehab or chase the dragon harder? I dont know if he had anyone in his life who could help him? There is audio of Neil Young in an interview. He says he was going to rach out to him but it was too late.
He goes to rehab? Then Nirvana returns for a reunion show/tour and Courtney OD's.

Would Nirvana have basically been remembered much like Puddle of Mud has?
Nah, they still would have been one of the firsts.
Grohl leaves anyway and outshines Cobain with the Foo Fighters.
