I'm not discounting the guy at all because I love having him on staff.

I think a big reason people want to keep him as head coach is because they think we'll be a (even bigger) recruiting juggernaut.

But let's examine.
2004. O is named recruiter of the year.
2004 - Ole Miss' class is ranked 31
2005 - Ole Miss' class is ranked 30
2006 - O's first Ole Miss class. Ranked 16th.
2007 - O's second class. Ranked 19th.
2008 - O fired. Recruiting class finishes at 28. 2009 - Life goes on. Ole Miss back to #19.

Freeze has certainly done as well or better.
Pulled in the #5 class in 2016.

It's hard to tell what impact he's had on recruiting at LSU. We signed the #6 class a month after he was hired. and went to #3 this year. Although, Rashard Lawrence is probably a direct result of O's.

Does it stand to reason that LSU recruiting would probably be just fine (or better) without O at the helm?

Unfortunately, I think he's probably one of the best DL coaches in the country and I would hate to lose him there.

O has been incredible in DL recruiting. He got Arden Key in his first week at LSU.

I wouldn't say overrated at all. He's known for being one of the best. Rick Neuheisel had a story that when O was going after Eddie Vanderdoes he wouldn't leave the school until he had the last word with him over Rick. He stayed in his car four hours just waiting .

All I know is that he seems very committed to it. He identifies who he wants and goes after him full bore.

No it isn't. He's been lights out at LSU so far and he was fantastic at Miami and USC. Orgeron is the only reason we have Arden Key and he was one of the main reasons Rashard Lawrence stayed home instead of going to Ohio State. Not to mention that he gets the credit for shutting down Miami's momentum with Glen Logan.

I wonder if the death penalty or similar will be worth it.

The guy is poised to reel in the top 2 DTs in the country in his second year at LSU.

lol he was pulling in good classes while winning 3 games a year. At ole miss who was seen as the worst program in the sec at the time.

I think that says enough.

Coach O has recruited, coached and sent off 12, count em' 12, first round defensive lineman. And you ask if he's overrated?

Giving credit where it's due, O has been very instrumental in building relationships and getting our foot in the door, but it's been the coordinators and head coach that have sealed the deals. If he was a lights out recruiter, we'd probably have Rashawn Gary.

He had some big misses as a head coach but he is one of the best there has ever been, no doubt. Wouldn't trust him finding a qb though tbh.

Uh, no.

At Miami, he notably recruited HOFer DT Warren Sapp and DT Cortez Kennedy.

At USC, he recruited NFL players DT Shaun Cody, DT Mike Patterson, Manuel Wright, DT Sedrick Ellis, DE Lawrence Jackson, DE Jeff Schweiger

At Ole Miss, as HC, he closed the deal on DE Greg Hardy, WR Dexter McCluster, OG Rishaw Johnson and 5 star players OG Michael Oherand DT Jerrelle Powe

At Tenn, he helped recruit LB Jerod Askew and DB Janzen Jackson (who said "I love him (CEO).")

At USC, in his second stint, he recruited 5 star recruits DT Kenny Bigelow, and QB Max Browne. He was also the main recruiter for high 4 star recuits DE Greg Towsend Jr, WR Markeith Ambles, and CB Chris Hawkins. He assisted Monte Kiffin bringing in the 2015 #1 overall NFL pick DE Leonard Williams.

At LSU, he was the main recruiter for DE Arden Key, DT Rashard Lawrence, CB Savion Smith, DT Ed Alexander and OG Donavaughn Campbell, just to name a few.

This class, he is the main recruiter for LSU commit DT Tyler Shelvin, the #1 player in La and the nation's #2 overall DT.
