Former French President Nicholas Sarkozy suggested Europe impose a carbon tax on all U.S. products if President-elect Donald Trump pulled the country out of the Paris climate change agreement.

Over 100 countries have ratified the 2015 Paris deal to curb carbon emissions in an effort to tackle climate change. Trump, a climate change denier, promised to withdraw from the agreement during his campaign.

Speaking to French broadcaster TF1, Sarkozy said late Sunday: “Donald Trump has said – we’ll see if he keeps this promise -- that he won’t respect the conclusions of the Paris climate agreement. Well, I will demand that Europe put in place a carbon tax at its border, a tax of 1-3 percent, for all products coming from the United States, if the United States doesn’t apply environmental rules that we are imposing on our companies.”

Sarkozy, who is running for presidency again, also reportedly warned that Europe cannot afford to be “weak” or “naïve” when it comes to free movement of people and trade, referring to Trump’s promises of putting the American worker first and preventing jobs from going to foreign employees.

Why shouldn't we put American people first for jobs? Anything else is absurd. And when did this whole free movement of people thing start? Why even have countries?

Pull all US troops out of "Old" Europe and tell them "you're on your own, bitches!" Threats generally work two ways.

The nerve of these frickers. Let's make them pay their FAIR SHARE of our defense of them and see what they do then. Just a fair share would kill them. They are all funding their socialist and environmentalist programs off the savings they realize by not funding a military as it should be funded.

Sarkozy had a lot to do with getting France to where it is today. Half Muslim and deteriorating fast.

Just to remind everyone... America never ratified that treaty.
Obama signed it, but without the advice and consent of the senate, he was signing for himself but not the US.
I think in his first days in office Trump should submit the Paris treaty to the Senate for ratification and request a vote. Doing so would remind the world that we have not yet ratified the treaty (even though Obama said we did).
If the Senate rejects the treaty, then if any other nation attempts to impose tariffs they would likely be breaking existing trade agreements.
I considered it to be a horrible act for Obama to sign a document saying we had ratified that agreement, effectively lying to the rest of the world.

France doesn't need imported goods. They make their own wine and cheese.

We should have left them to be overrun by a bunch of Jew hating extremists that wanted to enforce their own brand of fascism! Oh wait, they are doing that to themselves already.

trade war.

I long to see the Red Chinese army response to Trump
"making" them double or triple or quadruple the value of the Yuan.

Ironic comment considering that France is already having something of a populist uprising in their own country.
