What is the deal with colonizing Mars?

I get the idea that the human race would want to voyage there, explore, research, etc etc. But why the desire to colonize the planet? Elon Musk (and others) talks about it as if his goal is to setup a new civilization there.
Do certain extreme climate changers think that the Earth is going to become uninhabitable in the next 100 years or something? In the event that the Earth warms (or cools) to the point that certain existing areas of the world will be very difficult to live in, I get that various populations will face hardship, mass death events and likely wars over resources. But that is more mankind fighting over the available land versus the Earth itself becoming no longer hospitable to life.
So I get the exploration idea behind it, but I am curious about the long term goals here. I would think the Moon would be far more manageable a process if the goal was setting up a colony off Earth to protect against extinction.

Mars is in space where there's no air or gravity, so we'd have to colonize it with trees before we can live there.

It's about having a "backup system" to Earth much like a server or computer. If you have important stuff housed somewhere, it should be replicated off site to guard against something destroying it.
Mars is that backup system. If Earth is destroyed, it's a way to make it so the human race doesn't go with it. Musk and others have been vocal about this.

It's about diversification to ensure the survival of humans. Earth has had extinction level events before and will have them again.

We long ago colonized the Moon and Mars. We just occasionally talk about it to encourage more funding of missions we know nothing about...

we are a species of explorers and dreamers...that is what has allowed us to progress so much over time.
mars is just the next step in that quest and since it is too far to really round trip, there will have to be some source of resources there.

Umm, yeah, that's the goal. It's to save us from extinction as a species and to further our horizons. Mars will probably be a terraformed planet that we can fully live on by the end of the millinium, so long as we don't nuke each other to death.

It's possible we'll make it somewhat uninhabitable over the next 100 years, but by the end of it, we should be a Type I Civilization to where we should be able to reverse it. Why not have another planet that we turn around?

The Moon can't be possibly terraformed though, and if something particually catostrophic happens on Eath, the Moon will be directly affected as well. We certainly need a Moon Base, but a Mars civilization will ensure the future of the species, not the Moon.

Let HUD take over the colonizing efforts. With a little Section 8 infusion, Mars will be fully populated and trashed within a year.

This is the deal. Elon musk has an army of "futurists" who think in 6 months our entire country will be automated, and in two years we'll be living on mats.

So the plan is to colonize a planet that has no water, toxic air to humans, and takes years to travel there? All in the event that Earth becomes inhabitable? I get that we are curious and explorers by nature, but this is dumb as shite.

my issue with mars is that we would have to change the entire ecosystem of the planet in order to live there unless everything will be enclosed. I could see using Mars as a stop-over to begin a longer journey with the lack of gravity, it would use much less fuel to launch from there helping with longer journeys.
