I want to start getting into scotch, but I know nothing about it. What are some good bottles to start off with? What is your favorite?

I can drink some serious scotch , therefore I drink Johnnie Walker red . It is a blend , if I am just sipping I break down and get a single malt like glenlivet . Takes a while to get used to the taste , but now I love it . Smooth buzz and no hangover ..

Balvenie Doublewood. Runs about $70

Love that stuff.

The 12 year is the most common and what I would recommend.

Cardhu 12 year is my regular scotch and about $40 a bottle

Balvenie Doublewood and carribean cask are in my rotation

My expensive bottles are Macalan 18 yr and Lagavulin 16 year. The latter being my absolute favorite

Cheaper single malts ($40-60) I like Highland Park 12 and Glengrant

More expensive: Oban 14 is my favourite right now. Macallan 12 is pretty good, 18 is really, really good.

If you want to start in Scotch (Single Malt) just try some Glenfidich 12 or Glenlivet 12. Both are Speyside whiskies, fairly straight forward, more floral and fruity. Then if you enjoy it, branch out and try Highland Park 12 or Ardbeg 10 both are peated whiskies. The Highland park will not be as smoky as the Ardbeg, but will give you a sense of what peated Scotch is like. My favorite Scotch that is a normal release is Springbank 12 Cask Strength and Ardbeg Uigedeal.

Lagavulin 16, Oban 14, Balvenie DW or Caribbean. But honestly you just need to taste and see what you like.

Sitting outside on a cool night with a fire and a glass of Oban 14 is so relaxing.

He is just getting into scotch. This will kill him.

Aberlour is a great start point as well as Glenlevit. You will find with scotch that the region from which the scotch originates will have a great deal of influence on the taste.

I like Speyside single malts.

Mortlach Flora & Fauna. I am not the biggest speyside person. But that was a special whisky. It is now unavailable, unless you can track down some bottles.

Easily available? Perhaps Bunnahabhain 18. The 18 is far, far better than the 12. I also enjoy the Ardbeg offerings, especially Oogie.

Lagavulin. But be prepared for a peaty, smoky drink.
