The only "homerun" hire would be had by taking the bama approach and throwing the bank at a pro coach.
An offensive guru would be in order and preferably someone with an extensive college resume, so Chip Kelly is your man.
Start at $7mm/yr for 10 yrs and go from there, that is, if you're serious. If not, then who really cares?

Miles had plateaued at LSU. This was his most talented team in years and after 4 games (really just one) it was clear he refused to make the necessary adjustments to possibly bring LSU from a perennial 2+ loss team. LSU could have kept Miles for another 10 years and the play on the field would have been the same. He refused to acknowledge his approach was wrong and that's why he's out of a job.
As far as the next guy is concerned, who knows who the "homerun" hire will be? It's very likely that LSU won't get the perceived "homerun" coach. However, the last two hires weren't met with great fanfare, yet they seemed to work out ok. LSU has some built-in advantages to make it a place where good coaches can win.
Stupidity spouted off by someone who was either not alive in the 80's or has no idea about the history of LSU football.
Bo Rein was hired to coach the 1980 season. He died before ever coaching a game which left LSU in an unexpected scramble mode. Stovall stepped in and did a pretty good job getting guys to come here. Unfortunately, he wasn't that great of a coach. LSU then hired an older pro coach (Arnsbarger) to come in. He did a great job with Stovall's talent, but didn't care about recruiting. Joe Dean then made 3 successive cheap hires (Archer, Hallman and Dinardo). Once LSU decided to spend some money and make football a monetary priority (with the formation of TAF), things took off. Saban wasn't cheap and LSU spent a ton to upgrade the facilities. When Miles was hired, LSU made it a point to continue upgrading the facilities AND pay a ton for assistant coaches.
I don't know who LSU is going to eventually hire, but I'm confident they will devote significant resources to whoever they get. The only way LSU goes back to the 90's is if they get hit with serious probation (which crippled powerhouses like Oklahoma, USC, and Alabama for a time), or they decide to stop spending money

you are a non-Herman hire away from returning to the '90s.

You're assuming Herman would be a home run hire. That's not even a guarantee.

Look at LSU football before the Saban/Miles era....it's damn ugly
#9 in the country when I graduated in 1990.
That's not all that ugly.

Miles had a 57% winning percentage when we hired him.
Saban had a 64% winning percentage when we hired him.
Dinardo had a 43% winning percentage when we hired him.
Hallman had a 64% winning percentage when we hired him.
Archer had never been a head coach before.
Arnsparger had never been a head coach before.
Currently...
Jimbo Fisher has a 82% winning percentage.
Tom Herman has a 95% winning percentage.
Larry Fedora has a 64% winning percentage.
Dan Mullen has a 61% winning percentage.
Jeff Brohm has a 72% winning percentage.
Willie Fritz has a 69% winning percentage.
Mike Gundy has a 66% winning percentage.
Bryan Harsin has a 74% winning percentage.
Ok. Now let me tell you why you can't go by this.
Miles was at Ok St. A little sister in the Big 12 who rose up and beat Oklahoma. They were a coaching graveyard before he got there.
Saban was at Michigan State. A little sister in the Big 10 who was on the rise, but still an afterthought after the Perles heyday.
Dinardo had been at Vanderbilt. I don't have to tell you how horrible they were.
Hallman had been at Southern Miss, where he did a good job, but mostly....Farve.
Archer...whatever.
Arnsparger is one of the most respected defensive coaches in the history of football.
As for list 2:
Fisher inherited Florida State, who had been a national powerhouse for the greater part of 30 years under Bowden.
Herman inherited Houston, which Art Briles and Kevin Sumlin built into a mid-major powerhouse (with a parenthesis around the Levine years)....key words mid-major...they don't play Texas or A&M every year.
Larry Fedora has done a decent job but he raped and pillaged Southern Miss through JUCO's until he could get the NC job, where he's done a really good job....in the ACC (barely a power 5 conference).
Dan Mullen has won 61% at MS. State in the SEC West...can't knock him for that.
Jeff Brohm inherited Taggard/Pertrino's program and has kept it between the ditches (although I do think he's a good coach)
Fritz has been an FBS head coach at Ga Southern and Tulane.
Gundy has Pickens' millions behind him and can't get over the hump.
Harsin is living off Peterson's work at Boise.
There is NO guarantee in ANY of these guys' resume's that they would be successful at the level LSU is expecting.

I keep telling y'all Jeff Brohm "IS" the guy LSU should hire if they miss on Herman. Solid defense and a very explosive offense at WKU.

somebody didn't pay attention to where bowden had taken them a few years directly before jimbo became HC.
JIMBO SUX!!!!!!!
ONLY won the west here every other year, 01, 03 and 05 at LSU
ONLY won 4 division titles at FSU
ONLY won 3 conference titles at FSU
ONLY won one natty at FSU
ONLY had a 29 game win streak
ONLY made the playoffs the very next year at FSU
ONLY had coached at least 8 QB's who have played pro ball. 4 first rounders.
TERRIBLE!!!!!
you really do not think he can win the west every 3 years? which at least has us contending often? unlike what miles had done since 2011? really?

Look at LSU's run of coaches before Saban and you'll see there are apparently quite a few.

New names pop up every year. Even the Jimbo fans are wavering. The ones that aren't think his team is underperforming because he's on his way to br, which is bush league.

Sometimes you have to take a chance and go for it. LSU will get the right person, if not we will fire his has in three years and try again.
