I understand being upset but this is just stupid.
"the navy will no longer have named rates, everyone's gonna think we're pussies!!!" good grief

I had a 99 on the ASVAB and was a deckhand (Seaman 3rd class). What of it? I did shite jobs and my college was paid for. This is just political bullshite. It was probably a way to pay off someone's cousin for completing "the study" on transitioning from the military. At any rate, why change what works?

It's all part of the bigger plan to make everything in the military gender neutral and identity neutral. The higher ups keep pushing for gender equality... meanwhile women can't pass the physical requirements.
You don't see how that weakens the military because you are a ginormous buttpussy with a Clinton bumper sticker on your car.

No matter what side of the fence you're on concerning this issue, this is the truth. Although I don't feel that rate and rank titles are pointless.
I was a HT2 during the seventies.

No shite. That's like saying you got a 35 on the ACT but decided to dig ditches instead of going to college.

my wive's cousin just went from being Master at Arms to Petty Officer First Class. At least she is less than 18 months from retiring.

this seems a lot like a garbage man wanting to be called a sanitation engineer
The Navy isn't the first to something like this.
This is like the Army changing from calling cooks a food service specialist to calling them culinary specialist. The introduction of the ACU had officers remove their branch affiliation. Now unless you know them, you don't know if you are talking to an Infantry, Engineer, or an MP officer.

So explain it
The ratings are a way of classifying what you do in the navy. For example, we have many rates that work on my plane. The rating is there to symbolize what each person does. So an "AT" works on avionics or an "AME" fixes our oxygen tanks, the AW's fly. So now, its all gone, they are just PO's (petty officers) with a number designation.
It wasn't broke, so why fix it. The main issue I have with this is the tradition in our ratings. Each person takes pride in their rating symbol and this history of those who wore it before us.

You don't know what you're talking about. The diversity in the military is amazing. Motivation for joining is beyond just a job or long term career aspirations.
