Can you talk me out of thinking Dan Mullen wouldn't be a bad choice?

Considering what he's done at Miss. St. and the recruiting ceiling he has there in the middle of the woods? There was a short time where he had Mississippi St. as the #1 ranked team in the country. That's not necessarily an easy job considering, it's Miss. St. I wouldn't necessarily think I'd be unhappy with that hire.
If Herman or Jimbo falls through, thoughts and why do you think he's not a very good choice?
I downvoted my own post before a lot of you will, so I already took care of it for you guys.

He's one hell of a double.
But we are swinging for the fences here, and this ain't the instructional league.

I wouldn't be upset about it. I would be more for it if you could promise me Ed O, Aranda and Raymond would be on staff.

I think he's the #1 fall back option
Not fricking Larry Fedora or Lane kiffin

He may be a QB whisperer, but he seems like a milquetoast dork who wouldn't be great at recruiting. I think he's a solid plan B after Jimbo and Herman, though.

Can you talk me into believing Mullen would be a better choice than Orgeron?
Right now I'm not really in favor of keeping O at HC either, unless he sets the world on fire this year.

Give me O with the current staff besides BDP and Grimes and give me a quality OC

he'd have to give up those yeezy's so that is a tough proposition for him to face.

Mullen coached under Meyer longer than Herman. There is a reason Meyer kept him around so long. The guy is a good coach, he's just stuck at Miss State. The question is why hasn't he moved on. No other school has offered him a job.

Mullen has a pretty good track record. I think with him being at Miss St. people seem to have forgotten about him. Coach O won 2 SEC games while head coach in Mississippi. Mullens record speaks for itself, and again, #1 at some point at MSU. Tell me that's easy to do.
IMO, Mullen would do what he could to keep most of the staff intact.

He got hired at state because he had Tebow and he still has a job at state because of Dak. He hasn't done anything worth while at state before and now after Dak. So no I don't want him.

While we could certainly do worse, we could certainly do better. He had one good year with a bunch of seniors and Dak. The rest has been mediocre - bad. Hasn't shown that he can maintain success. Granted this is Moo State, there's only so much you can realistically accomplish there so you can cut him some slack because of that.
But still, they're back in the cellar now so thats a red flag. If we land him that means we had to settle for an option that was way down the line.

my thoughts on Mullen
quote:
people laud the guy for not being completely terrible at MSU but not really being very good either. MSU is far from a great job but due to being in a premier conference they have a ton more in money and resources than they once had. So sure in comparison to the school's history he has done well. Still being mediocre isn't all that impressive either.
Look at that schedule, getting to 7 wins isn't that big of deal.

Mullen play calling can get predictable.
sound familiar?
LINK
Also the guy currently makes 4.8 million a year. He isn't taking a paycut to move so we really want to pay 5 million + a year for Dan Mullen?
quote:
What baffles me and the question I want to ask is how many failed attempts does it take to realize something just isn't going to work? Bama stuffed that play more often than not last season and they were stuffing it Saturday. But Mullen had to keep trying it because it has been successful against other teams.

If they fired Miles after 4 games, paying him millions not to coach so that they could hurry to the front of the line to get Dan Mullen...multiple people need to lose their jobs at LSU. Come on people, this move wasn't made to get Dan Mullen.

I'll just leave what I posted in another thread about Dan Mullen.
quote:
Mullen coached Dak, Tebow, Alex Smith, Leak and the guy at Bowling Green (Josh Harris). He also recruited the last great QB at Utah (Brian Johnson) who is now his QB coach.
Mullen took a program who had 1 winning season in the previous 8 years, and went 9-4 in his 2nd year there. In that season Auburn was 14-0, LSU was 11-2, Bama was 10-3 and Arkansas was 10-3.
He took freaking Chris Relf and made him competent enough as a two year starter. Relf was a 2 star with only a Miss St offer. After that he took Tyler Russell and broke Miss St passing records with him. He then took Dak, a guy everybody missed on, and groomed him into yet another NFL starting QB like he did with Alex Smith who is still starting today.
Miss St is in the toughest division in college ball and hasn't had a losing season since his first year. Miss St, the team that was awful for a long time before he got there.
The dude would not only continue our pipeline in Florida (kinda hard to bring them to Miss st), but he also recruits the state of Texas, Fred Ross, who is about to break records for Miss St this year, and Louisiana, Josh Robinson had an incredible year in 2014.
Honestly, he's in my top 5 and I would love what he could do with the talent we have on offense. He does care about defense too.

Dak doing so well in the pros & MSU struggling this year hurts his prospects right now. Although, he did have 3 winning seasons before Dak became the starter in 2013. I personally think he has done a great job. He has so many disadvantages compared to the other teams in the division. Plus, he had to deal with Ole Miss buying recruits in his own state.
I would like to know Urban's thoughts on Mullen & Herman

LOL. Go look at quotes from LSU fans when Jimbo was here, and quotes from FSU fans when Jimbo was the OC there.
Fans always say a guy is predictable, I've seen Bama fans bash Kiffin and USC fans bash Sarkisian.

Yep. He doesn't understand clock management either.
