Or is he one of the greatest musicians of the modern era?

Sometimes I wonder if he is living off the greatness that is "Every Breath You Take."

I love The Police and don't really care for that song.

Um...No.

While that was their biggest hit, their early raw material ("I Can't Stand Losing You", "So Lonely", "Roxanne") spurred many newer rock artists to copy. Aiming at that one song is willful ignorance. An amazing amount of hits over a decade, along with really good deeper cuts.

While his Police career was and still is amazing, his solo career has cemented him as a superstar. The jazz/world music influenced music he put out in the first few albums after the Police was, to me, stunning. The album "Not Fragile" is still one of my favorites.

I listen to solo Sting all the time, and the Police only if it happens to play.

Of course, you may just be trolling...

I am not trolling. I am just thinking out loud. Pondering, if you will.

I like Sting and listen to him. However, I agree with you that he has attained a label of being in a very select group of what is considered to be the greatest musicians of all time. Unlike you, however, I question whether he really belongs there. I'm not saying that he definitely does not, only that it is debatable in my point of view.

This is probably my least favorite popular Police song.

Gordon Sumner is highly overrated IMHO. Stewart however can slap them skins.

Well, greatest "musician" is one thing, but he's certainly become one of the greatest figures in popular music and culture in the last 30-40 years. Like Bowie (and no, I put Bowie above him) he's transcended pop music with his social activism, his soundtrack and Broadway work, and, of course, his tantric sexcapades.

The Police have some great deep cuts. He is a great lyricist but also has fantastic musicians alongside him in Summers and Copeland.

I enjoy his Unplugged performance from 1994:

I don't know much about Sting as a person. I enjoy some of his live stuff. Concert recorded in Italy on 9/11/2001 is pretty cool too:

I hate Sting and the Police so much that I can't even offer a credible opinion.

Overrated, but not egregiously so.

The only Police album I like is the one with Every Breath You Take on it. King of Pain is my favorite Police song.

I hated Sting's solo stuff.

But I respect his contributions to music. Most people I know, and most artists I like listening to, like Sting and the Police so I know I'm in the minority with my opinion.

Sting was good until about 1987 or so. then he started to suck. that solo album in the arly 90s was just awful, and its only gone down hill since.

I know sting newer stuff sucks b.c my mother likes him. My mother loves michael bolton and 1990s billy joel. The 1970s stuff sucks to her, except under pressure but that is due to a reference in that she likens to my father.

I don't know anyone that has worse taste in music than my mother. Wait I take that back, my step mother is worse. She really likes recent Cher.

Great example of a talented singer/songwriter who surrounded himself with world class musicians. While I've always enjoyed some of the Police material, Sting's solo stuff was always great to me. Not a weak link in regards to the players.

On a side note, the man has a freakish voice. There are very few people his age that can still go out and sing songs, in the recorded key, that they wrote and recorded 30 years earlier.

Couldn't have said it better. I don't like Led Zeppelin or the Beatles either, but I recognize their greatness.
