true, they make them that big to be able to carry all your gas cans needed out the weather.

What matters most?
Resale - Toyota
Longevity - probably Toyota or Ford Super Duty
looks - Ford
A lot of people buy tucks based primarily on brand loyalty. So the best thing for you to do is look at them and see what you like.
I personally want a GMC Sierra. Have a Tacoma now.

Owned a 2008 Tacoma. Loved it and had no issues with it in the 6 years that I owned it. (bought in 2010 with 8k miles)
Bought a 2016 Tundra this past December. Love it as well. No issues obviously as it's not even a year old.
I can't speak for the other brands, I just know Toyota has been incredibly reliable every year I've ever owned one.
Thought about going Ford after the Tacoma, but it was a 50/50 split of people who loved them and people who said they hated them.
ETA: The backseat on the new Crewmax Tundras are insanely spacious. You can also lift the seats up to create even more room if you need the floor space. Has a back up camera, touch screen radio, navigation, etc...
Safety ratings are highest for it's class (I believe) and quite frankly, I think the interior looks a lot better than the other brands.
Only downside to the Tundra for me is the gas mileage. I get 12 mpg, but I'm driving all city miles and I'm only driving 3-4 miles to work every day, so I really don't care.
I've also heard some people complain about the hood of certain trucks being to "high" and it impedes vision. The Tundra doesn't seem to have this issue.

My buddy works at a Nissan dealership and has been telling me how badass the new Titans are. Oh well, sounds like Toyota/Ford/GMC is the way to go

My Tundra has 127K miles on it with no issues. I have a friend that just bought a 2015. His previous Tundra had gotten up to 265K miles.
Look on the road next time you are out and about and see how many old Tundras are still going strong.

Do you have a family?
How much/How far do you drive for work?
Transporting multiple people frequently?
Do you haul heavy loads frequently? (giggity)
As per my post, I'm partial to Toyota and would recommend them to anyone, but I'd definitely go test a few different ones out before you buy. You may have different preferences than other people.

That's a poor metric.

^^^^^^ My current set up, awesome power, silent cab, great HP and gas mileage. Best truck I've ever owned.
