How Much Should LSU Be Willing to Pay Tom Herman to Get Him Here?

LSU should throw the money at Tom Hermon to persuade him to leave UH. They should be willing to shell out as much as $8 mil/yr.

There are going to be a lot of major programs chasing after him. And he is a member of Mensa International (meaning he is VERY smart).

Nick Saban gets 7 Mil
He's won 5 National Championships
I think Herman woudl be psyched with 5-6 mil with incentives.

Thanks for a real opinion instead of just blasting the OP. You realize that UH has offered him a $5 mil bonus if the Cougars join the Big 12. If this guy could really make LSU explosive again offensively, we need to make him the country's highest paid coach.

Saban gets 7
Harbaugh gets 7
Fisher is 5.15
Urban is 5.8 and he's doing incredible things
Stoops 5.4
Sumlan and Strong are 5
Dabo is 4.5
Les is in the 4's
Freeze is 4.7
Franklin 4.4
Herman is making 1-2 million a year?
Based off that.. I believe somewhere between 4-5 million annually.
Absolutely no need for 7 million given only 2 coaches are making that. Not even Fisher.
Here is a breakdown of Herman's contract

Here is a breakdown of Herman's contract

New University of Houston football coach Tom Herman's contract includes a steep buyout if he leaves within the first three years of the deal. Herman must pay $2.25 million if leaves for another job before Feb. 28, 2018, according to details obtained Thursday by the Houston Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request. The buyout amount decreases to $1 million on Feb. 28, 2019, and to $500,000 on Feb. 29, 2020. In December, Herman agreed to a five-year contract worth at least $6.75 million, which can increase substantially if he reaches certain performance incentives. The contract includes a $1.35 million annual salary - the highest for a football coach in school history. Herman can receive an additional $500,000 in deferred compensation if he completes the contract. If at any time during the contract UH wins a conference championship, Herman will receive $50,000 increases in base salary (currently $475,000) and non-salary compensation (currently $875,000). Herman's contract also includes incentives for performance on the field and in the classroom. After 24 months of employment, Herman and the university can discuss a mutual two-year extension. UH will provide a coaching staff budget of $2.645 million for nine full-time assistants, quality control/graduate assistant personnel, and a director of football operations.

I think somewhere in the 5's is really great for him.
It would be more than doubled his current salary and put him among the other top coaches. Only 2 coaches are making 7 million, but hey maybe he is worth it. I don't know. I agree with shut up and take my money. Just make it happen.

damn
Then probably 6, with the incentive of 7 if he wins a NC.
Or 5 if Houston doesn't get invited to the Big 12.
Hopefully the Big 12 looks at the fact that HOuston doesn't really ad a new TV market (plenty of Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Etc... fans in Houston already).
I woudl be shocked if Herman ended his career at Houston. Sooner rather than later he is going to start thinking "man it woudl be a lot easier to recruit kids to a 90-100K person stadium"

I agree if they don't join a power conference.. then it's more pressure on him every single season to go undefeated.. that adds up.. whereas in a power conference he can afford a loss and absolutely be in the playoffs with the way he has his teams rolling.
i think houston will continue to play with anyone and everyone though.
he is definitely my #1

Tom Herman would be at top of the list, but a lot of other teams will be bidding very high to obtain his services as HC also. Here would be my short list of candidates, in no particular order that would be a great fit IMO:
Frank Wilson ( We should consider)
Lane Kiffin ( he has matured under Saban)
Tom Herman ; on everybody's list)
Jimbo Fisher ( I don't think he would leave Fl State now)
Mike D'Antonio ;( very successful)

Someone please tell me who Tom Herman is.

LSU will not get Herman to coach their football team at any point in the next five years.
If the LSU brass would not buyout Miles' deal in 2015, there is no way they are not only going to do it now, but also spend several additional million dollars buying out another coach. One must also stop assuming that LSU is a dream job for everyone.
Once Miles is let go, this will be a very hard position to fill. I'm of the opinion that the next head coach is already on the current staff.

$5.5 million base with $750,000 bonus for SEC runnerup or big bowl game. $1.5 mm bonus for playoff appearance or SEC championship, and salary adjusted to highest current salary among active coaches if he wins the natty.

Seems like UH is going to spend huge to try to keep him.
