I owned a Honda walk behind for about 15 years. The dual blades were great on the clippings. That said, I have a bigger yard now and use a Dixie Chopper 50" Silver Eagle. It doesn't care what type or how thick the grass is. It just cuts and cuts really fast. I can't imagine ever going back to a walk behind.

Before I spent $800 on that Honda, I would look around for a used commercial zero turn. Some good deals can be found for not much more than that and you will have a superior mower.

I am not interested in a zero turn.

Still can't decide. Those bigger engine Hondas would have to be ordered. The 190cc Honda engine Husqvarna is in stock at Lowes. The Snapper is available at two places.

Hit up craigslist if you're handy. I found my commercial sanpper at a local small engine repair place for two fitty.

they can order what you want and have to honor the sale price...it only takes 5 days to get to your dealer

Really don't see why more people don't use commercial walk behind mowers. Can get a used 36" belt for like $1500 and it will last forever. Faster than a 21", will last forever and a nicer cut than a residential mower.

OK, but is it clearly a better choice than the Snapper or the Husky(with Honda 190 engine) that I can get on a moment's notice?

In my opinion, yes.

I've done a good bit of research

I set my son up with durable equipment to mow yards from 1 acre lots with a our commercial zero turn, to 50x75 small neighborhood yards with the Honda, so he can save for college and maybe not have to take out student loans.

Every push/walk behind we've ever owned had the body or drive system of the mower fall apart before the engines ever died...I'm 50 and mowed my way through high school and college with commercial snappers jacobsen and toros and lawnboys...funny though, the lawnboy body was magnesium I believe and the mower deck lasted forever...just had to rebuild the two strokes every now and again.

My take on the Honda: The nexite deck combined with it being a Honda with hydrostatic drive sold me, especially after talking with a handful of commercial guys that use them...IMO had the Honda been available when I was a young mowing fool, I'd have bought one.

Just drove to Lafayette to buy the Honda. Not available at the Ellic Home Depot, and Loewer only had the electric start. Report to come.

I have a john deere X734 (not the ones from lowes, but bought from dealer).

I added the bagger and the high lift blades and it works great on my zoysia.

I own a hrx Honda with the 190 and love it. I am looking to upgrade to the 30" toro with 230cc bs or a 36" walkbehind. But, the Honda has been great, just want something bigger.

My wife makes fun of me all the time about it.

BUT, I walked into Pack N Paddle today and walked out with a brand new kayak.

Honda HRX217k5VKA review. This is the $599 unit found at Home Depot.

This thing is like a vacuum for a lawn. I am very pleased, and am now done with Toro. Random thoughts:

I now see why many like rear wheel drive on these. This mower gets tippy when full. That did not happen with ant of my high wheel Toros. I still prefer FWD in general, but with this one, it would not work.

Started on first pull, but did not thereafter. Must be the choke system. I wasn't able to run it three minutes without stopping because the bag filled fast.

The lever controlling how much is bagged vs. how much is mulched needs to be all the way to mulch, or you will still fill the bag pretty fast.

Mulching mode left nothing. No trail- no clippings. Now, this is mostly poa annua. It will be interesting to see what happens when my St. Aug comes in.

Grass was damp. This mower did not care. No stalling. No clog in bagging mode.

Height adjustment was easier that anything else I've used.

Speed adjustment was barely needed. I cannot imagine anyone using this thing set past medium. Hell, I never even got to medium.

5/5. Buy this mower.

I had a friend that used Snappers after my suggestion. He would use them 5 years and get a new one, because he could.

He switched over to the Honda a couple of years ago. His opinion is that the Honda is a better mower.
