How can you cognitively dissociate the our less glamous deeds from our ideals?

This thread is in reference to Colin kaerpnick. I've also been taught to seek the truth, and to examine issues from both sides. As a Ph.D. candidate, i tend to analytically and intensely scruntize arguments and perspectives in search of an answer.
How can those that uplift all that is good with the our flag ignore our shameful moments that didn't reflect our ideals. Is it that the means justified our ends or that yo just don't really care because it doesn't have a lingering effect on you.
The flag is worthy of all its praise and all its digust because those were our singular actions as americans. We uphold our ideals because that's what we are in pursuit of and when we fall short, I don't think we should just act like it didn't happen under the principles we yearn to live by as citizens.
Is it too humbling to admit the thing you deem as perfect is infact imperfect.
It was crafted by great, outstanding, but imperfect humans in search of perfection, so how can it be perfect ?

Your comment sums it up.
If it doesn't effect you, you don't care. You'll only raise your cross if it hits your front door.
No offense, it's usually too late at that point brother

If you are indeed a Ph.D candidate, you should know that man's relation to objective, absolute truth began to dissipate some 200 years ago. Even the idea that there is an objective truth has become circumspect and its obtainability has been in doubt for some time now. Damn that Kierkegaard!

No one has said that our country, its founding, or its current state is perfect. However, there are those that want to dwell in the past or on past behaviors of individuals in an effort to justify their current poor behavior. To expand upon your example, the black community is still attempting to blame slavery and Jim Crow era treatment of blacks for the current state of the black community.
The flag stands for what is best in us as a country. It does represent our ideals and what we strive to be. there are those like Kaepernick that want to say it represents slavery, because that happened during the history of our nation. It's a fallacy of argument.

Alcohol helps.
Its not and never has been and "in search of perfection"? no, the founders liked pussy, money, booze, power and material things just like we do. Did they do some great things and put great things in motion? absolutely.

Fair point, but what happens if laws, policies, and societal opinions continue to perpetuate wrongdoings from yesteryear? Maybe not to the pure extent of their original manifestation, but perhaps in a way doesn't allow us to move on fully from our past.

How can one take offense to perceived slights against the wounded soldiers and vets and blindly ignore the way we and our govt treats some of them upon return. And how we leave them empty handed? That's conveniently turning away from the truth.
How can u laud the valor of our WW2 vets while ignoring the way we treated our minority vets and Japanese Americans? It's hypocrisy at its best.
How can u laud Liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness while ignoring our suppression of the rights of ethnic, religious, racial and Sexual minorities?
These are not "half truths" or made of circumstances -- these are historical and empirical objective facts.

Is it dwelling on the past or dwelling on the perpetuation of historical conditions? Which one is it?
The flag represents everything that has happened under it. The good and the bad. Whether that is the valor of our soldiers or original sin of slavery.

In a civil society, there must be a social contract between the state and the citizen. Past wrongs that are perpetuated by the state should evolve over time; it's the citizen's responsibility, however, to trust the state's judgment and exercise prudent, discretionary action in response. I see no visible reason for the particular act of civil disobedience by Kaepernick as a prudent response to any judgment by the existing state.
