When did ESPNews die a slow painful death?

I miss the old format from 2003-2004. It was great just a half hour of no BS. Just highlights from the world of sports. It felt like a true alternative to the bs antics.

Heck, when ESPNEWS was launched in 1996, it was specifically for sports highlights

I hate that sports highlights have died. I don't care for the boring personalities.

When ESPN started thinking it was doing something bigger than reporting sports scores and highlights.

Bro, why are you continuing to change the title? This is the 3rd time.

In fairness to ESPN, sports highlights on tv aren't really necessary since everything is easily accessible online

Did you read your own article link? Here's the answer
quote:

Why does anyone need a sports highlight show when they can just open their Twitter page and see Vines of all the big plays of the night right on their timeline? Why do we need to wait for SportsCenter to recap the Warriors-Heat game when they can go online to a number of different venues that will stream it for them instantly? With ALL the highlights at our fingertips, the digital universe is our highlight show. And we just don’t control the remote, we control the rundown, the length of the highlight, what we want to watch and when. Why complain SportsCenter isn’t showing enough NHL highlights when you can just subscribe to the NHL YouTube page?

Everyone on here always says this, and they also say the same thing about MTV showing only music videos. The truth is, those stations were dying so they had to change it up. I worked at Viacom, and MTV still has a station that shows only music videos. And guess what, it was our worst rated station in our whole company.....

ESPNews (and Sportscenter for that matter) were done for when it finally became easy to stream highlights online.

Remember, it wasn't all that long ago that online video looked like shite and took a month and a day to load.

I literally haven't watched the channel since Highlight Express was cancelled. They should just shut it down.

all news is dead. it was boring and only corroborated stories were ran.

"news" is now about deceiving attention getting headlines, spun stories and rumors with some gossip sprinkled in. there is "liberal" news (news that conservatives don't like), neo con news, and news that appeals to the reality show mentality. you know, the mentality that doesn't read as they must be "entertained"

Because the day and age where you needed a tv channel/show tk get sports highlights and results is long gone. With the birth of the social media era, internet, and smart phones, there are so many ways to receive info on a game moments after it has concluded.

I don't think it's a big mystery. It wasn't as if ESPN used ESPNN for anything BUT hourly highlights and commercials - ESPN didn't kill it.

The internet did.

I quit watching years ago. If they show a football game I want to see, fine. Otherwise, a waste of time.

When I didn't have cable, I used to stay up late on Sunday nights to watch all the NFL highlights on the George Michael Sports Machine. What a great show that was.

Sadly, Sportscenter as I used to know it is forever dead. Fox Sports Live is even worse. Sportscenter from the '90s and part of the '00s had much better anchors, graphics package, awesome intros and music, equal coverage of all sports. No boring interviews filled with cliche answers. No pregame/postgame analysis with way too many analyists. No coverage deficated to lame Twitter, Facebook, Instagram crap that no one cares about. No constant "insert X athlete is the best ever" debate. No lame humor that no one finds funny. Just scores and highlights from all sports equally. Just like it should be.

What a shame those days are long gone. No wonder ESPN is losing so many viewers.

If ESPN would have legit analysts talking about in depth stuff like what kind of defense this team is running and how this will play out instead of non stop race and political theatre BS, they wouldn't be hurting so bad in the non game ratings market.
