Depressed people in denial

I think my best bud/roomate has been depressed lately, and I need the OT's advice on where to go from here. I have asked him if he has something wrong with him, and he just ends up getting angry and going in his bedroom. Nothing has gone on that I am aware of. I am of the belief that if someone has to ask, it is true.
He has been to work maybe 4.5hrs in the past week and a half. Says he isn't fired, but I am not sure that's true. Lays in bed 99% of the day and only comes out once or twice to get food or water. Hasn't been out of the house (other than those short periods of work) for longer than 5 minutes in 12 days. Absolutely no interest in girls, and will not ever go out to do something...even going to get something to eat. This is typical behavior, but it has gotten much worse over the past week and a half. I have spoken with people who have a lot of experience with depression, and they all suggested he was depressed.
I don't know what to do for this dude. I have asked him multiple times if he was fired or if he has something wrong with him, and every answer is "no", and he goes back in his room. He's still got to come up with rent on the 1st and having someone constantly at the house doing nothing has become a problem for me at this point. It is dragging me down.
Any advice on what to do? Should I call his parents and tell them what's going on?
*The second paragraph is 100% true and not an exaggeration at all

idk man but i'd watch how he is acting. also check his twitter. is he hostile?
Arizona man who apparently tweeted that he'd murder his roommates is arrested in death of roommate

Call his parents. They know his history better than you.

He is depressed. I had a bout with this in college one semester and had exactly the same behaviors. It took my friends intervening to get me out of it.

He is 100% depressed. Source: I did the exact same thing before. Lucky I wasn't fired and I got help.
No shame in it. Depression is a real thing. It isn't always permanent, but people go through points of it in their lives. Sometimes it is triggered by something, sometimes not.
You don't always need drugs either. Or just temporarily until you get your life back on track (the method I used).
You buddy needs help no matter what he says. Whether he helps himself or seeks it from outside sources, he needs help. Letting him know you aren't judging but that you think he needs help and you are willing to help could be all he needs to get out of it.

Spot on. You and others he trusts need to intervene.

Because depression is a chemical change in the brain, not just being sad about something, it's hard for the sufferer to recognize the problem, let alone seek help.

Being in denial about depression is really common. A lot of people don't even realize what depression feels like, but what you've said sounds a lot like depression.
I wouldn't call his parents. That would not be helpful and it would probably just add stress to his situation.
Read this to learn what you can do to help and how to cope with living with a depressed person (because it can definitely affect you too... trust me, been there and done that).

edit: calling his parents might be something you can do later, but it's not a first step.

I can't get him out of the house to do anything. He just flat out won't do anything. Hasn't gone to a bar in a year or more. The last thing we did was Hogs, and I had to drag him there

That's exactly how my ex-H was. You can't force him to get help, but it's nice of you to be concerned. I'd reach out to his parents.

Sounds like some issues I was having with my roommate a few months ago. Alcoholic, never left the house, etc. Even this morning he didn't go to work in Kenner for some reason, was rather annoyed I didn't have the kitchen to myself this morning . My best advice is to be open, if he doesn't want your help then frick it, not your problem.

Second the suggestion to call his parents if you have their contact info. If he becomes potentially suicidal, in some areas, only immediate family can push for a 72 hour stay at a facility through court. He might get pissed, but you never know what's going on in someone's head and how bad it can be underneath the surface.
Unfortunately there's still a stigma when it comes to mental health and depression and it does make some people, especially college-age males, resistant to get help.

Just let him know if he ever wants to talk about anything, you're there for him. If he takes you up on that, don't give him advice, just listen and empathize.
