How long is Sean Payton's leash?

Looking at his 9 years coaching here it is basically this-
-high impact surprise first year to NFCCG
-2 years at 15-17
-a 4 year run averaging 12 wins, including the SB win
-2 years at 14-18
I don't think he could be gone in one year even if shitting in the bed 3-13. Another non contending non winning season would certainly warm his seat up for 2017.
In today's NFL, more than 3-4 consecutive non contending years is about it. I'm guessing a terrible 6 or less wins could make 2017 critical to his future. Another 7-9 or better prolly gives him 2 years slack.
If into the playoffs this year then his leash is prolly extended further again. Another SB and he can call his own shots as coach for life. Ideally, another big push for a SB with Brees and they might go out together on top.
I'm just considering how his long term legacy might play out. I think of Shanahan post Elway. Joe Gibbs in Washington kinda faded out with 30 wins in his last 4 years. Whaddya think?
Peruse his history HERE

I would think two 6 or under win seasons and he would be gone.

He has another sub-par year in him. If next year is another sub-par year as well I think everyone decides to go there separate ways.

I think it's shorter than most think. If it's REALLY bad this year, I could see it ending quickly

He just signed a 5 yr extension worth $45mil
He has a ton of security. These post, esp yours, are funny

If we have a really bad year (3 or 4 wins) I could see us mutually part ways. Another mediocre 7-9 season he stays on but his seat is on fire.

man that was a fun run
I think the Drew situation has a lot to do with the length of Sean's leash. If we keep losing with Brees it will be looked at differently than losing with Grayson obviously.

Think he's got this season and then next season is essentially playoffs or blow it up. There won't be any excuse next offseason not to address the guard situation and build more depth along the lines.

The Saints aren't dumping him.
The most likely scenario for this year, possibly, would be Drew Brees telling him in confidence that he's not coming back, the Saints having a shitty start, Payton having a Jim Mora "diddly poo" moment, and then on a Monday morning waking up and saying "frick this, I'm outta here."

I don't think he or Loomis is going anywhere until Benson passes.

Sean Payton's role in drafting, trading, FA signing, etc.
Does anyone know how much power he has here.
It would seem to me that he would have a lot, but I'm just speculating.
The guy can coach offense. He's proven that over the years. He is less adroit in hiring defensive coordinators. We all know that.
My big question is how much credit or blame should Payton get for the roster we've put together for the last 2-3 seasons?

I think he is among the most powerful coaches in breadth and depth of control. The fortunes of the franchise rise and fall with his decisions. Loomis is more a facilitator than leader IMO.
Contract? When has that ever stopped a change? Plenty of coaches have collected from ex-teams after firing.

His job is ridiculously secure and I have no idea how. The personnel decisions have made the team an absolute mess. He is a great game day coach I think but his coaching hires/loyalty paired with his personnel misses should not have warranted his extension.

It would be up to Payton whether he stays or goes, because Benson isn't firing him

well yeah that means he'll be here for years
you call yourself a sports fan and spout stuff like he has a extension as the reason he won't be run off (either by the team or walk away himself) if they win 3-4 games. please, your opinions are off-base 94.2% of the time so carry on

At $9mil a year? You realize he is one of the 3 highest paid coaches in football, right?
There isn't a stronger statement of commitment than that. Sean Payton doesn't have a "leash".

Sean Payton would need to miss playoffs for 2 more consecutive years for this to become an issue worth discussing.

Maybe. Depends if Brees is here or not. But they clearly have faith in the guy.

of course. lets play what if brees isn't, obviously payton will get a fair crack at life w/o drew and judge accordingly with the options that we roll with. Drew stays, we strike out this and next year... will be a pretty hot seat. 9 mill and drew, results in some manner are needed.
