With it's $100 million budget plus who knows how much on advertising (I've seen the commercial at least 20 times during the Olympics).

I still don't understand why they made this movie, but it's tracking to make a bout $11 million and finish 3rd in its opening weekend...maybe less.

Dumb dumb dumb idea. Nothing good could have came from this. The only good that MIGHT come from this is if they decide not to remake classic movies ever again.

Honestly I think the sad part is Kubo is only on track to make 12 million. It's fricking excellent and one of the best movies this year. The effort that went into it is astounding.

I hear the advertisement on radio and it annoys the piss out of me. Probably the overly raspy annoying " my name is Ben Hur" " you should have killed me". Don't watch TV so haven't seen the trailer, but if I had to guess I'd say a really old Jason Statham was playing the role.

I haven't seen the original, but I still know this is a movie that is off limits for a remake.

This movie was produced to appeal to Christians and numerous celebrity pastors were brought on board to shill for it. When I first saw the ads, it struck me that they were not marketing this angle. I guess they were doing so just not to people like me (the only ads I saw were during the olympics).

I think it is an interesting comparison with the Noah flop. I think it bombed in part because religious folks didn't like where it strayed from the Bible and nonreligous people couldn't give a dry fart about the story.

BenHur was always an odd one for me.

For some reason, studios still believe remakes are the "safe" option.

You'd think after flops like Ghostbusters, Lone Ranger, and this movie, they'd stop believing that.

I watched a decent amount of the Olympics, but this thread is the first I've heard of a Ben Hur remake.

I actually saw it and I actually liked it. Morgan Freeman's hair is a mess and he plays his usual self, but it doesn't detract from the movie. The slave ship scene is particularly intense and well done.

I'm too young to have a sentimental feeling towards the original, and I'm not snob enough to shite on a movie unless I see it. Despite the creation of a remake, you can still always go back and watch the original. Sometimes it seems people don't realize that.
