Question for the dog owners of the OT

We have a friend who lost her home in the floods. She and her fiancé are staying in a small apartment until their house is repaired and we took in their young dog since we have a fenced yard and an elevated, covered space for him to stay dry and shaded.
Anyway, we aren't dog people though we've considered getting one because our 5 year old son absolutely loves dogs. This pup is used to being in a quiet neighborhood and we live close to a busy street and a block from a routinely busy fire station. There are a lot of noises that this poor guy has never been exposed to, especially with the frequency that we have here and as a result, he's been constantly barking for about 4 hours.
I'm just curious, are these noise elements something he'll probably get used to? Will he eventually settle and not feel the need to bark at every sound? We might be keeping him for a month or more and I just want to make sure there isn't something we could be doing for him to make him feel more settled.
He's mostly an outside dog and our three old-arse cats couldn't handle a dog inside. Also, the dog is very good and sweet and pretty well behaved. I know he's just probably freaked out by the new environment.
Any advice or suggestions?

Bring the dog inside. He will chill out and acclimate....assuming he is house broken.

If I was you, I'd go out and spend some time with him.. Take a seat and see if he will just let you pet him and comfort him. In my experience, my dogs need some help understanding that noises and new situations are going to be just fine. If I just hang out with them for a bit, they relax and settle in. Works for my dogs anyway.

clean it up good then make the dog an inside dog and you will be shocked at the demeanor change. My dog I adopted 11 years ago was an outside dog that never would shut the f*** up and once I brought him in, it was a night/day transformation. My cat I had didn't put up with his sh*t and one good paw slap, my dog was like "Ok....and we won't ever get close again"

Some dogs are extremely sensitive to loud noises. I have two dogs and anytime it is thundering or people are popping fireworks she does not leave my side. When she goes outside when the noises are around she barks as well, but once she is back in the house she is find as long as she is near me.
Have you tried to go outside and interact with the dog when he start barking as a result of the noises? Just sort of calm him down until he gets use to the noises, if not is there anywhere in the house you can put him so that he and the cat does not mix it up?

Dogs are social animals and he is now in a random environment you might take him for a walk or play with him so he can get used to things.

We spent a few hours today running him in the back yard and my son really played a ton with him. He seems pretty comfortable with us but I totally get why he's unsettled. It isn't crazy noisy but I know for a fact it's a hell of a lot more noisy than his owners neighborhood.
we'll definitely get him out and about around the neighborhood tomorrow. His owners are staying not far from us, so they will be stopping by regularly to visit him.

the dog is just not used to its new environment. Dogs are quite adaptable, so do not worry about the excessive noises he is now experiencing.
Go outside and pet the porr fellow and show him a little TLC.
He should settle down in a day or so. But you may also want to bring him in at night in a crate size suitable for him.
And about your 5 year old wanting a dog, don't just get a dog for him. If you ever get a dog, be prepared to take care of that dog at 100%.

Oh trust me, I know! That's why I've been resistant to getting a dog in the past. We are good pet owners, have three cats, a frog and a fish but a dog requires a special amount of attention.
For the sake of his comfort, I intend to give him plenty of attention and he's certainly not lacking in attention from my son at this point, I'm just a legit dog novice. Love them as a species, just never owned one.

He'll calm down. He's a young dog in a new environment with new folks watching him. Probably just wondering where his old folks are.
Give him a couple nights and he'll quiet down

The dog will acclimate to the new surroundings.
You're a good dude (and wife) (pics?) for helping.

Walk the dog,
He will be less nervous about his surroundings. He will be able to associate the sounds he hears with what he sees, plus it will tire him out he'll sleep better

That would be a massive mistake.

Let him inside. The cats will show the dog who is boss really quick. Any dog that comes into my place usually gets a quick paw to the face from my girl cat and they know to mind their business.
Dogs are pretty much huge pussies when they arent in a pack.

Tell the dog to shut up. Give him the cats as a peace offering

It's true about a dog vs cat house and how dogs have to adapt.
