quote:Agreed. However, media outlets are saying she is the first African-American to win gold in an individual swimming event. That, is actually false. This African-American won gold in the 50m freestyle in 2004
She is black and won a gold medal. That is legit and the story

Her come from behind win was beastly

Because she is?

If people in Europe are from Africa, they call themselves African. If they are from another country, they call themselves by that country's name.
We just have 315 million retards in this country and most of them couldn't point out Africa on a map
Also, there are plenty of black people in this country with as many or more degrees of separation from the continent of Africa than some white folks.
It just doesn't make sense.
If you are first or second generation African immigrant, great, but call yourself a "Nigerian-American" or something specific.
/off my soapbox

You really think the media saying the "first black american to do _____" is dividing the country?

Watching some white people like y'all get your panties in a twist over the term "African American" on this board never ceases to amuse me Personally, I don't have a preference between the two. It's not a huge deal to most AA/black people. Most folks use the terms interchangeably anyways.
Yeah, it can lead to some minor confusions sometimes, but "AA" is still better than most of the prevailing terms it replaced at its advent, IMO.

So saying she's the first female AA swimmer to win gold is actually limiting the accomplishment, correct? She's the first black swimmer to win a individual gold period?

quote:No. But I truly think the term African-American is divisive.

If a Polish person moves to America and has a child, that child will grow up to be know as American and all his kids will too. Instantly Americans
There are black people who have been here for 100s of years and they are still "African-American." It is like a constant moniker that you will never just be American or shite to me. I hate the term personally. I love how America is a melting pot of all countries. So stop with the African bullshite. Simone is a great AMERICAN.

It was 2000, but you're right.

Sounds like a personal problem

All the news outlets are saying that she's the first African-American swimmer to win a gold.

Is she the first black female swimmer?

When we have to continually identify people by their race, and African is not a race, we only promote division.

Wouldn't you rather just be referred to as an American?

Meh I don't use the term AA to describe myself. But Im also not going to categories it as "divisive".
To me it seems like a select group of people are looking for something to be upset about this morning.

It is hard to celebrate an achievement (and this was an achievement) when so many of the articles about it include a lecture.
Part of Yahoo's headline on an article by Jeff Passan is that "our ugly history with black swimmers may be cracking."
Nobody likes a fricking lecture. The media won't let you enjoy someone's success.
