NAACP members call for ban on privately managed charter schools

The NAACP has long expressed concern about charter schools, but now its members are taking a tougher stance. At their recent annual national convention late last month, members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People approved a resolution that included language calling for a moratorium on the expansion of privately managed charters.
For years, resolutions at annual national conventions of the historic organization have raised issues about charters, but the 2016 resolution uses stark language. The new resolution (see text below) notes that “charter schools with privately appointed boards do not represent the public but make decisions about how public funds are spent,” and it cites a number of problems with some charters, including punitive disciplinary policies, fiscal mismanagement and conflicts of interest.

The resolution won’t be official NAACP policy until the organization’s national board meets soon and decides whether to approve it — but the message from the majority of its members are clear. It says in part:
* “Charter schools have contributed to the increased segregation rather than diverse integration of our public school system.”
* “Weak oversight of charter schools puts students and communities at risk of harm, public funds at risk of being wasted, and further erodes local control of public education.”
* ” [R]esearchers have warned that charter school expansions in low-income communities mirror predatory lending practices that led to the sub-prime mortgage disaster, putting schools and communities impacted by these practices at great risk of loss and harm…”

It's amazing that after all of these years, the NAACP still thinks anyone with any power actually gives a frick about what the NAACP has to say.

wtf?
There's an argument to be made, but that one makes no sense whatsoever!

Maybe Colored People need to advance themselves more

i am not sure of the argument but i'm guessing it is...people will take advantage of the funding to create shitty schools and sell them to the various poor/black communities, basically selling shitty schools as the good ones without actually being good, just to make a buck? does that sound about right?
when in doubt, i always default to something similar. progs push government as some unbiased institution with tons of oversight and typically argue against private ventures for lacking these issues. it's basically the flaw in their whole worldview

Our president listens, and acts

Meh, I would think the angle is that charter schools take power away from ignorant inner city school boards, thus preventing them from themselves skimming funds and enriching their families.
The move to take away most public schools from the New Orleans school board after Katrina was one of the best things to ever happen.

I actually agree with the NAACP?
It would probably shock them to learn that many of the charter school in Louisiana are run by their members.

It's times like this I'm glad to he colorless.
Like all white people (except Italians).
They call us the nitrogen of races, since we are colorless, odorless, and deadly.

Interesting, many of the private start up charters are created by African Americans.

So thankful my kids do not have to attend public school.

So they are pissed because parents who want their children to learn and have a good education won't stand for terrible administration and distractions from children with terrible parenting
