What an awesome fish. It's always cool to see someone who knows what they are doing handle a fish but it still manages to bash the gaff against the gelcoat of that pretty boat.

When it started out,
Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island...
Thousands of fisherman come...
For one thing...
I was honestly hoping that it would be something other than tarpon. Would be a funny video for the fark guys.

Nice fish...probably 50+ years old. Curious what they do with the dead tarpon after taking all the pictures? Hopefully some of the money raised goes to conservation.

They use to go to the Baton Rouge food bank but this year the fish go to Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans courtesy of CCA volunteers. Not sure about the Tarpon specifically but if I had to guess they end up as crab bait.

Anyone care to give me a brief rundown on how to catch em? I will probably never try just curious.

My buddy from A&M and his team got third. Looked like a hell of a time.

The tarpon rodeo is an embarrassment. Times have changed, quit killing fish for wanton waste and getting a trophy for doing so.
In my younger days I won a few TR trophies. I have since burned them to show my kids what's right and wrong when it comes to fishing.

Dude, you need to get off the high horse. Nothing is wasted. Most fish go to food banks. As far as tarpon, they are just big shiners. They do not have a shortage of them and only a hand full are brought in.

I dunno if I'd go that far, but I agree that it's pretty stupid to kill such a cool fish that you can't eat. I also don't think the TR puts a big dent in the poon population haha. That said, Tarpon have such a remarkable migration and Louisiana knows so little about what they do while they're here. I wish they'd do something to study them instead of killing them.

No high horse here, buddy. I'm embarrassed if anything.
Spade fish, jack c's, tarpon...none go to food banks. Cut those out except for tarpon and make those catch and release only for the rodeo.

I thought that I've read Louisiana's tarpon population remains here year round.

All I know is that Louisiana has a bad reputation for killing a lot of tarpon among the tarpon guides in the Keys. They handle them with kid gloves there and I usually get at lease one comment of "You're from Louisiana? Ya'll love to kill tarpon over there."
