re: Health related anxiety

I avoid it by assuming if a doctor doesn't tell me I have it, it can't hurt me. And then I never go to the doctor.
I assume I'll die before someone who has it the other way.

How interesting. That’s a scary symptom though. Everything says a heart problem.
Were you dealing with a lot of stress or life change, etc when that happened?

Lol, didn't realize this thread was mine from like 7+ years ago when I clicked it.

Lol OP is still alive! Any wisdom from all these years? What worked and what didn’t?

Honestly not really. It culminated about a month after I made this post where I had a mini breakdown. Had a visit with a psychiatrist who was basically worthless. I got put on meds for a while and kind of battled anxiety/depression off and on for the next 2 years. Recurred pretty bad again spring/summer of 2018. We had our third kid in September 2018 and I haven't had any issues since (knock on wood). Been off the meds for about years 2 now. Did a lot of praying during this time.
It's a nasty cycle though really because if I wake up and just feel blah every now and then I'll kind of worry it's going to come back but thank goodness it hasn't. Was a really tough thing that hit me completely out of nowhere.

Thanks for the response. That tracks with my previous episode I had about 6 years ago. It just went away for the most part. I’m convinced major life events exacerbate the problem.
Do you regret being put on meds?

Yeah, I was told s coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave soul only once.
The way I deal with depression or anxiety, I stop and think about what could be the cause. When I identify the cause, I address it. If I can chnge the situation I make changes. If not, I rationalize.
We are all going to die. Its just a matter of when.
Make the best of your situation.

Get divorced with young kids, you're praying for the stroke.

Yeah I know all about it. What do you need to know?
My tip would be to schedule an annual physical and follow up on any referrals

COVID taught me that even if you've had a PCP for years, they're governed by the rules of whatever hospital system they're affiliated with. You've been treating me for an existing condition, for years, but Memorial Hermann, etc., say you're not allowed to take that into account in a treatment plan? FOAD. They may say "Uma's Doctor's Office," but they take rules from their affiliated system.
Find one not affiliated with a major healthcare system (Methodist seems to do the same in Houston, as does Baylor Scott and White.) They're more likely to treat *you* as opposed to check the guide book of rules on what they're going to get whacked for, even if it's right for you.

Find a doctor that doesn't follow the rules? What are you even talking about? For a psychiatrist maybe.

Not really, I don't know if they helped or not but they didn't really have any negative side effects other than I would get a little headache/light headedness if I forgot take it one night.
Didn't like the idea of being on them but I had gotten to a point where I needed to try anything. I was in pretty bad shape.

That was what sucked was I couldn't figure out a cause. At that time of my life things were pretty much as perfect as I could have hoped for. I almost think that was the cause of my issues, things were so good I didn't want it to get screwed up.

Science is science until it isn't, dummy. The systems created "rules" based on government guidelines that didn't take into account a specific condition that would have caused me potentially fatal harm. Why bother asking about medical history of what your family had, or you have had, if it doesn't impact the treatment plan?
quote:
"I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm"
Doctor has to violate the Hippocratic oath to make sure they get routed patients from major systems to keep their business alive.
Look, there are perfectly valid "rules," such as if a patient indicates (paraphrasing) they they'll cause harm to self or others, you don't stop and ponder the situation, you call 911. Mandatory reporters for sexual or child abuse. Fine. That's not what I'm talking about.
I want OP to get "clean" advice unfettered by massively political and butt covering institutions force onto providers. He can do whatever he wants or feels is good for him (or should someone make the decision other than the doctor that seems him?)
I'm merely highlighting a risk. With anxiety or mental health issues, depending on many factors, the provider may or not suck arse at treating his problem, but following a script or checklist for treatment given by the health system.

When i was a kid i had it. It was the 80s and my parents told me to stop being a hypochondriac. Nobody uses that word anymore but that’s what it is. If you have anxiety and ocd, sometimes you get fixated on symptoms and potential health issues. I had other ocds from preschool to middle school, too. When i started exercising most of it went away.

Good to know thanks. With anxiety, you’re never truly out of the woods but I’m glad you’ve got it controlled.

Good point. Common with OCD and hypochondria. You have to have something to worry about/control and if you don’t find it, you will create that problem. Therapy is really helping me find the source.
