Do you feel the Saints are banking on Brees to regress?

With all the information (or lack there of) in regards to the contract talks breaking down between the sides, who here believes Loomis is secretly hoping for a regression in performance by Brees this year that would either a) make him cheaper to sign or b) allow the Saints to move on from him worry-free?
I'm not going to speculate anything ludicrous like Loomis has his fingers crossed for an injury, but it's a very strange situation for a player that is almost invaluable to an organization and is coming off another good year.

I think they have until the start of the season, so they're waiting until the last minute to make a last ditch effort before he plays without future protection. I don't agree with how it's going, but I don't get paid for my opinion either.

I think Drew wants 4 years and the Saints want 3.

I think that they are confident that at some point he will be resigned. He will work with them next offseason. Thus the risk of him having a great year and demanding a little more money or regressing and demanding a little less money is offsetting enough to where they aren't overly concerned with trying to force something right now.

I don't think the Saints mind the years, it's the price they're concerned about.

Fact:
Sean Payton is already on record stating they see NO DECLINE in Brees performance.
Fact:
Brees successor is not on the roster right now.
Fact:
If we franchise Brees next year.... we must pay him over $43 million dollars a year as we've franchised him 2x before.
My Opinion:
They are preparing the masses for the time when they MUST pay a really large amount of money in a new contract for Brees (probably $30 million a year).
Fans will immediately question how can we build a "team" and sign free agents when we are paying one player $30 mil all by himself.
But....Brees will be paid. Saints have no choice.
We dont want Brees hurt....no one is waiting for him to be hurt this year.
Without Brees and with our current QB situation....we are a 4 win team.
Brees and his Agent have got the Saints over a barrel and can squeeze to their hearts content.

I think the number is around 25m a year and Drew wants 4 and the Saints want 3 so I think it's the years. 75m vs 100m

Drew is still a stud and will most likely have another great year. The sticking point is, IMO, that Brees is just asking for too much guaranteed money and Loomis doesn't want to give in due to Brees' age.
This will most likely be Drew's final year as a NO Saint

Just like Sean Payton is the head coach for the Dallas Cowboys. You've been so good at predictions. All you do is bitch and expect the absolute worst. That doesn't make you a realist. It makes you a bitch.

I think it's more they're sure Brees will try to work a deal out with them alone next off season due to his loyalty. But if a team a QB decides to throw out 25mil a year for him, I wouldn't blame him for taking one last big payday. I haven't liked how the Saints have handled his contract situation at all honestly.

Heath Evans, others say Drew Brees played with torn MCL
Posted by Mike Florio on January 24, 2011, 6:59 PM EDT
NBC Sports

As the debate continues regarding the Jay Cutler MCL tear/sprain/whatever, word has emerged that another fairly high-profile quarterback of whom you may have heard played with a torn/sprained/whatevered MCL during the season.
Saints fullback Heath Evans, who filled in Monday as the Skip Bayless foil on ESPN2’s First Take, got the ball rolling by explaining that Saints quarterback Drew Brees played for six weeks with a torn MCL.
“Sorry Drew, I love you, but Drew Brees played six weeks with a torn MCL,’’ Evans said, per Brian Allee-Walsh of NewOrleans.com. “I know what Drew Brees did with a torn MCL.’’
In early October, Ed Werder of ESPN reported that Brees indeed had a “minor” MCL sprain.
“It wasn’t a mystery that his knee was bothering him and he was wearing a brace for a few weeks,” Saints tackle Jon Stinchcomb told NewOrleans.Com. “Drew was able to play through it. He’s a tough guy. In no way am I saying that he’s tough and Jay Cutler is not. I don’t want to make that comparison. I’ve never played with Jay nor am I condemning the fact that he left the game yesterday.
“But we were aware about Drew’s knee. But it’s not our position to speak on another player’s injury.”
And so we’ll ask Drew about it in a PFT Live interview that airs (or whatever these things do when they’re played over the Internet) tomorrow.
Heck, even coach Sean Payton joined the chorus, telling reporters at the Senior Bowl that Brees indeed suffered a “low-grade MCL sprain.”
It’s a far cry from what Payton said during the season. “There’s no situation,” Payton insisted only three days after Brees injured the knee against the Falcons in Week Three. “His knee is sore from the game. There’s no specific injury other than that he has soreness. We didn’t put him on the report. He took all the reps. There’s not an injury to report. I was pleased with how he functioned. He functioned fine. It’s something that as the week goes on, I think he’ll have no problem with and he did a real good job in all the team stuff today.”
On the injury report, Brees’ name appeared three times — Week Five, Week Six, Week Seven — with a knee injury. He did not appear on the injury report in Week Four, the first game after the non-situation injury happened.
All MCL sprains aren’t alike, however. Brees’ low-grade sprain and Jay Cutler’s reportedly Grade II sprain are very different injuries. So the real news is that Brees had a knee injury about which the team wasn’t necessarily as open as it could or should have been, given that Evans says Brees played with the injury for six weeks.
And given that Payton initially denied that an injury happened. And given that the Saints left him off the injury report for one full week after he suffered the injury, and given that Brees ultimately appeared on the injury report only three times for his supposed six-week injury.
Drew Brees is a warrior. He has played hurt in the past. He got through last season on guts and heart with both a shoulder and foot injury. The Saints know it's a matter of time, when the mind can't overcome physical injury and age. You got to love Drew Brees' fighting spirit.

Nope, but they know the decline is coming and don't want to get locked into a pricey long term contract.

It gives the Saints no benefit to sign Brees now, period.
Brees will be 38 after the season, if he walks he walks.
You can't just throw a shite ton of money at a 38 y/o when you don't know how he will look this year. If I'm the Saints I'm hedging my bets and waiting for next offseason

Brees is looking to be highest paid quarterback. Look for a 3 year deal fully guaranteed close to $70m.
