I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel Nicholson is overacting so much in this film that it feels like someone else doing an exaggerated impression of him.
His dialogue and mannerisms are just too corny to realistically accept this guy runs shite.
I don't think Nicholson's overacting hurt The Departed at all, but I definitely agree that he was hammy AF.
To wit, have you guys ever seen this gif?
I've seen The Departed like five times and I just assumed it was from there. It's actually from his comedy with Adam Sandler - Anger Management. Which is obviously a goofy movie, but that's how outrageous Nicholson is in The Departed. I just assumed it was him.

Goodfellas, but Casino is better than both.

don't think Casino is better than Goodfellas, but it's under-rated ... the book it's based on is outstanding ... same writer who wrote the book about Goodfellas ...

The Departed is great.
But it's not Goodfellas.
In fact, it feels like a facsimile.
Jack over-acted and that is very noticable but it doesn't hurt the movie...
Because everyone overacts...it's this giant over-acting testosterone film that took a good Japanese story and made it crazy-bigger than life American.
Look, I really like the movie. But Scorsese just lost his compass in this film. It's like a caricature of Scorsese if the director was a teenager.
But it's somewhat comical. With the language and characters and ending.
I'ts American anime...in film.

It's not just you, Departed was good but lots of it felt forced well, at least to us...

is there a movie that has used popular music to set tone and mood better than Goodfellas?
The scene when Henry is driving around, whacked out on coke and the helicopter is following him starts with Jump in the Fire, has Magic Bus, Monkey Man just an amazing scene.

It is outstanding. I would also say that American Hustle should be mentioned.

There have been a number of films that were musically-themed that did an excellent job - Good Morning Vietnam , Almost Famous, to name a couple (and, to credit them Barry Levinson, with his variety television experience, and Cameron Crowe, his first career was as a rock journalist, typically did great work with popular music in their films).
But, among his gifts, Marty has a connection to musicians for whom he also made films, The Rolling Stones (Jagger, especially) and The Band, just to name 2. So, for a big budget filmmaker, Marty is way up there in this regard.

Goodfellas, and it's really not close.
