Shooting free throws underhand is superior; However almost no one does it

Despite being proven to be the most effective way to consistently score from the free throw line, most players won't employ the underhand shot for fear of being labeled a 'sissy.'
Excellent article on the topic with numbers and other details:

And how is it that Barry arrives at 80 percent as the minimum standard?
“Ninety is exceptional,” he says. “Eighty gives you one miss out of every five you take. That’s a pretty good deal. You're a great free-throw shooter if you shoot 90. You’re not a good free-throw shooter if you can’t shoot 80.”
So instead, it’s only Barry who loses sleep over these pitiful shooting percentages.
And therein lies the dilemma. All except a scant few have taken up Barry — who learned the now unorthodox underhand form from his father, who played and coached semi-pro ball — on his repeated offers to serve as their free-throw instructor. It seems this is at least in part because of the amount of pride a player — someone already competing at the game’s highest level — would have to swallow to perform the “granny shot.” Not even Barry’s four adult, basketball-playing sons settled upon it during their respective careers.

Maybe he was just good at it that way...that's no guarantee anyone else will be good at it.

The only time Wilt Chamberlin was good at shooting free throws was when he was using the underhand technique.

I need proof it's superior because nothing in that quote shows it is.
Even his sons don't do it.
I hope you get hit by a truck TBH

so one player was able to successfully shoot that way and that makes it superior? steph curry shoots over 90% from the line by shooting overhanded, i guess that makes it even better than this. you actually think players would be afraid of shooting that way if it actually was a superior way to shoot free throws?

Elena Delle-Donne is a 6 foot 5 woman who shoots 93.6% in actual games. Yet guys in the NBA can't make 50%? I don't get it.

They've done studies on it. (I forget where)
Underhand does allow you to be off and still make it. It's a forgiving shot.
Normal shot results in on or brick.
There is something about the rotations and soft nature of the underhand...
You will always have a higher % because it is more forgiving to being off the mark.
That said, you'd have to really practice it to find that sweet spot that is foreign to most players.

The percentage of time you’ll make a “granny-style” free throw is about 90.4 percent. Instead of fixing the radius of the circle, I fixed the variance of the random variables to one. So I have to find the radius of the circle first. The circle equation, thinking back to high school geometry, is x2+y2=r2. The distribution of x2+y2 is a Chi-squared distribution with 2 degrees of freedom. Thus, to find the radius, I solved the following equation for r: 0.75=1-e-r2/2. That makes r˜1.665. Using this value, I can find p=F(1.665)-F(-1.665), where F(x) is the cumulative distribution function of a standard normal variable. This gives the solution of 0.904.
In other words, if you’re a 75-percent free-throw shooter using the “normal” method, you can expect to improve to above 90 percent shooting underhand!

can someone explain to me how that matters. how can we pull an equation like that when we know shite about how effective people usually are when they shoot underhanded free throws? how can we look at the average free throw rate of people shooting overhanded and then put it into an equation of how successful people would be underhanded if we dont have any way to put their success rates into context?
what about shooting free throws underhanded allows them to use that equation and find that number?

Maybe if you've done it your whole life. Players have the muscle memory of shooting it conventionally. The secret to great free throw shooting is going through the same exact routine every time you shoot. Mine was 3 dribbles and a spin. That and lots and lots of practice.

Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was about to break Barry's season FT % record. All he had to do was hit one more FT. It was the last game of the season. Barry was in attendance sitting courtside. Right before Rauf shot that final FT Barry started screaming to try and distract Rauf. It worked as Rauf missed the FT. Barry was kicked out and banned from the arena for future games.

When was the last time someone in the NBA attempted an underhand FT?
College too?

There's a theory about hand size not allowing some to be great FT shooter. As the ball stays in contact longer with fingers.

What about underhanded free throws makes this hard to believe?
What about the obvious greater amount of backspin and more forgiving trajectory isn't obvious.
Anybody who questions this is a full blown retard.

In college, I think Rick Barry's son does. And Louisville has a big guy, I think from Africa that does.

I thought it was widely accepted that underhand free throws were better for most people. Especially with those guys with huge hands.
