Are female crabs less desirable?

Just went and picked up a bushel of crabs and there was a choice of male or female. Wife thinks females are better...I think that's nutty. Males better, right?

Females will give you more heartburn

I like the females because I like to eat the eggs and fat. However, I think male crab meat has a slightly sweetet taste. If I had to pick I would take some nice sized busters. No eggs but fat and packed with meat.

They tend to be smaller, but are more likely to be fat, because they shed less often than males. Dirty shells are also more likely to be fat because it's been longer since they shed last.

How much was a bushel or crabs?

IMO, females are more likely to be full than males. I don't particularly care for the roe in them but some people do and many make soup from the roe. That said, there is no comparison in taste between a prime, full male, they are absolutely divine. The trouble is catching males full enough to be worth a damn. Females, on average, don't seem to have this problem.
I very rarely buy crabs from a market but I've been told by a crabber that 99% of all the #1 crabs caught in LA are sold to Maryland because they simply can't catch enough in the Chesapeake Bay area to meet demand and they're willing to pay obnoxious prices...

They had $40/dozen crabs (he was calling these #2s) and $15/dozen ones, and they were selling boxes (I assume this is an actual bushel) for $90, they said was about 8-9 dozen. We just got 4 dozen of the $15 variety. Probably should have ponied up for the $40 ones, but $100 more seemed kind of steep. We're only 5 people, so even if they're light we'll feast for sure.

Sounds good, been wanting to get some.

We picked up 5 dozen (mixed female and male, not 1s but pretty damn nice crabs) for $60. This was the guy handing us these crabs directly off of the boat.
As for preference, a lot of people prefer the females because of the eggs. However, your "selects" and "1s" are always going to be males because they are bigger. I also find that males have a better taste to the meat. Not as grainy and sometimes sweeter.

Buying very large males is less risky than buying smaller ones as far as fat and meat content, because the larger a crab gets, the less frequently it sheds. At some point, it will not shed again.

Never noticed a difference.

I like the eggs, so I prefer females.

I like them Broads… Mostly because of the orange shite in the inside. Im not picky though, I crush em both equally.
If i were to buy two bushels of crabs does it make a whole lot difference where I pick them up as far as price & quality. Im near buck town or is it worth the trek to Westwego lot or other places?

We picked up a dozen males friday after work. They were a little on the small side but full as a tick. $25...

I've sold quite a few. If there was 8-9 dozen in a box, it was small crabs. A solid #2 will have around 7 dozen. #1s will be around 5-6 dozen in a box. As far as what are #1s and #2s, there will never be female #1s, unless you just find a guy who is saying that cause they are big, which there are some. But because they are females, from a wholesale standpoint, they are always graded out as #2s, and should be priced accordingly, regardless of size. No dock in LA pays anyone #1 price for any female.
As has been said, taste is just that. Some prefer the taste of the meat in a male. Personally, I will buy big #2 females all day everyday over any size male offered. I love the fat and eggs, and prefer that over the meat in a crab. And find a good coonass woman who will pick the heads at a boil and save a mess of fat, and you've got the best roux money can buy.
